So, this guy on my AIM list wants to install linux.

Well, I obtained a Pentium 200 system just recently, so I decided to install FreeBSD on it. First time I ever used *nix. So, I guess I was in the same boat, although, I know a bit more about computers than that guy does. lol

But, while it may get annoying at times, help him as much as you can, but, after that tell him to read up on it. Or try to talk him out of installing Linux as best as you can.

Nah, tell him to set up Linux From Scratch or Debian, then send him to #debian on irc.freenode.net. He'll get ripped a new one. :D

Tell him to go to a bookstore and buy one of those big books with the Linux distro in the back of it, I think they still make them and its an excellent way to learn about Linux in a not-so-dumbed-down fashion. Instead of hiding all the harder things, the book will explain them in a way that he will understand. If he doesn't understand them, at least he will have something to refer to when approaching you or others for help.
