Decent size place, they actually had a pretty good selection of motherboards and cases...

Anyway, I stopped by today as I saw they had a closing sign up. 2/3 of the store was gone, only a few items remained. They had signs up they were selling everything at cost, and I confirmed this with an associate.

What I found entertaining was that their 'cost', was STILL more expensive than stores like newegg/monoprice/firefold....

No wonder they went bankrupt ;)

Those big retailers usually get discouts, so their costs is cheaper

Yep, that was like CompUSA when they went out of business near us. We stopped inside, they were trying to sell off their old CRTs used for registers and office computers at 50 + 60 dollars a pop (17" CRTs!). The only decent deals was some old crap video games at maybe $5 under competitors. We kinda laughed as we looked around. There was a printer that was supposedly 50% off, yet it was slightly MORE expensive than the same printer at Best Buy (which was only about 700 ft away from CompUSA)

Oh well, I don't miss CompUSSR, I still got CC and Worst Buy for retail stores.

Maybe, they were a weaker mom and pop store. They probably bought from newegg and just marked prices up.

I know that some Asian stores buy in bulk at Costco and resell

When compusa closed I got some very thick and nicely shielded coax cable for less then 20c a foot...

It is sad to see local business are dying due to the bid box store. It is not funny because it slowly eat away at a community and small business can't buy inventory at the same price point as the large volume purchase of the big shops to compete.

Out of business sales are BS. The store usually has crap stock, only a 25% discount on already high/low priced items, or they will jack up the price so far that 40% equals the MSRP.

the store likely got a rebate from the manufacturer (not the end user kind) to make their actual cost of goods lower.

When I was managing a computer store - I would sometimes order shit from newegg because I could get it shipped from them cheaper than I could if I ordered from my distributor and picked it up at their warehouse.

It's all about volume - the little guy gets screwed.

And a lot of places you can order at online use the same distributors that I could order from - and the distributors just drop-ship stuff with custom invoices.

TechData is one of the main ones that does this. I see invoices from online stores and I know that the stuff came from TechData because of the format of the invoice - it's exactly the same as TechData but with a different logo.
