I had over $400 of late fees with the Library of Michigan (huge library). I returned all the books at one of their drop-off stations outside the building and after 6 months the letters stopped coming.

Yep, but they will certainly continue sending you ambiguously threatening bills for a few months after, just in case they CAN scare you into giving them the monaaaaay.

LOL, I remember when I was like 15 or something and forgot about some library books. My dad got a letter in the mail, and he's like "WTF the library is threatening me with legal action because you have a book out." I was like "". I think the fine for the one book was like $15, but I turned it in during the annual "Return books with no fine" week they have around here. Suckers.
