So there is this older programmer at work...

NuclearNed

Raconteur
It used to be kind of funny, but its gotten out of hand. This doesn't just happen to me - he does this to everyone. Our offices are laid out so that almost everyone sits with their back to their door. In other words, we are all easy prey.

He used to sneak in right behind you then yell your name. Or alternatively, he would whisper your name. Either way, it scares the crap out of most people including myself.

I am the keeper of the MSDN library in our company; yesterday and today he has been busy installing new software on his pc, so he has been in here every few minutes. I'm at my snapping point. I've had a very tense week anyway dealing with emergency problems, and if he does this one more freaking time you are all going to be reading about the aftermath on cnn.com.

maybe just speak with him nicely and ask him to stop

if that fails, go to HR and threaten a lawsuit

good luck

I should do that when I get a job, haha.

But booby trap your doorway and hope the boss doesn't come. Make a Stapler drop on his head or something.

I'm wondering what the thrill is for him. I mean, at one time or another everyone has snuck up on someone and scared the willies out of them. But 10-20 times a day? Its starting to seem pathological.

Scream really loud the next time he does it and flail wildy backwards. I guaruntee it will be the last time he does it to you.

Eventually he will get bored of it and then it'll take more to get his thrills... like a shooting spree O_O. Watch out!

EDIT: Another idea... wait till he's on a vacation or off somewhere. Sneak into his office or cubicle. Print screen, save it, and make it the wallpaper. Turn off icons and check the auto-hide the Start menu. You can even mess with the monitor horiz/verticle position so the start menu won't even appear.

He's worked here for years and done it as long as I've known him. I'm seriously going to throw something heavy at him with intent to injure.

Tell him to stop, say it's old and not funny anymore, and to cut it out. I bet if you actually flip out and yell at him about it he'll be scared to do it to you anymore. [edit] This would work better if he tries it and it DOESN'T scare you... [/edit] But you really gotta put some energy into it🙂

Or, Complain to mgmt that you are tired of it and ask him to stop. I'm sure others are tired of it too.

Oh yeah - he used to have a "disciple", a junior programmer that did exactly the same thing. This guy quit his job a couple of months ago, so I don't have to deal with him anymore.

Next time he does it, act like it made you start choking on something. Fall to the ground, and act like you can't breathe. When he starts to panic, bust out laughing at him.

Put a mirror somwhere in front of you.

That would be he obvious thing to do. The people in the security office at my job do that.

I took the "bad" desk in my little shared office so I could face the door. I don't like having my back to the door.

Hire Christopher Walken to break into his house at 2:00 A.M and have a little "chat" with him about this problem.
