The original movie was released as just "Star Wars" as there really was no hope that additional movies would be released -- even Lucas thought it was going to flop. The movie posters and the opening crawl only showed "Star Wars"

In the 1981 re-release they added "Episode IV: A New Hope" to the opening crawl since more movies (rumors of 9 total!!!) were en route and this was now, definitely #4 of a string of movies.
Ahhhh
Thanks for the explanation!!!!

I watching the despecialized version of Return Of The Jedi. It's painful to watch even without the bastardizations. It's half Muppets! LOL

Haven't read the thread, but nothing is stopping anyone from scanning a 35mm film reel at 4K resolution through a telecine machine.

The problem is the vast majority of prints out there are in terrible shape. Not only just scratched, but seriously faded and unwatchable. Most of the copies would be pink. It would be akin to something like this:

Or even this:

Remember, the movie is almost 40 years old. There are very rare dye-based reels out there though, which still have good colour.

This is where a digital scan gives you lots of flexibility. Using the bastardized films as a color comparison reference, the colors in the scan could be shifted and re-balanced to be closer. Apply the same shift across the entire scan.

This is precisely what a team did (illegally). This known as the "Silver Screen Edition" and it's incredible. Long story short, a band of rag-tag super fans got together and did what Lucas and his company said was "impossible" and provided the world with what they wanted.

Damn you. I just downloaded v1.0 the other day. Now, you say there is yet another (still better) version out there. I never had a chance to see if v1.0 was as good/better than the de-specialized version. Downloading v1.6 now. *grumble grumble*

The bummer is the 1.6 version seems to only be a BR .iso file. I don't want that.

I've played BluRay images with my HTPC via Kodi. PowerDVD has the BluRay decoder.

I'm sure it's possible. I've done 100s of DVDs in the past. Never tried with BR. Will have to google.

Mount ISO. Open with MakeMKV. Rip.

This will leave you with an uncompressed MKV.

You can run it through Handbrake if you'd like to reduce the file size.
