One of the guys made a statement that makes absolute sense. His words were (paraphrasing)

'It used to be that government was reactionary, in that there would be a natural process to making changes. Now government is being pre-emptive and making changes first and worry about the rule of law later'

Taking a step back and thinking about it I would have to agree. Ever since 9/11 I would say this is the case. Whether its the Iraq war, spill in the gulf, bailouts or immigration reform the answer seems to be "shove it down their throats and we'll sort it all out later" mentality.

Would you agree thats an accurate assessment?

I dont see how the spill in the gulf, the bailouts or immigration is being preemptive, its not really preemptive if your trying to solve a problem that happened or is happening. Not that I agree or disagree with the solutions, but this seems to be a blanket statement.

Meh, true it does sound like a blanket statement. Maybe not totally accurate which is why I posted here for others insight.

No, and the point is very vague.

Government hasn't really changed that much; the nation's economy has.

Our citizenry is at once the one with the best information available the most quickly and easily in the history of mankind, and one of the most propagandized and ignorant.

In the late 19th century, reportedly hundreds of thousands of midwest farmers subscribed to a socialist economic journal as they looked at how to deal with the problems in the economy, and had big wagon meetings and discussed issues. Today, we get Rush Limbaugh. Mass media PR has become far more advanced and powerful.

In this regard it seems the politicians might be a bit better than the followers.
With the issues today, there doesn't seem to be any clear cut solutions. I just hope the solutions that get picked are on their merits instead of political gains.

Have you heard of the Civil Rights Act? It was rammed down the throat of a bigoted America that didn't want it. Now just 50 years later it's political suicide to oppose it.

We have a Republic exactly so we can ram good laws down the throats of stupid people.

What shit, the shit you imagine? How did this thread begin? With this, no:

'It used to be that government was reactionary, in that there would be a natural process to making changes. Now government is being preemptive and making changes first and worry about the rule of law later'

And to which I replied:

'I don't know. All I see is the Repbulicans saying no to progress (change) of any kind. When you have cancer like that you cut it out. Republicans are American Cancer.'

So what I have said so far is that I don't think I agree with the premise advanced by the OP. The problem isn't change but the lack of it. I further identified the obstructionists and what should be done about them.

Then along come the uncomprehending reactionary boobs who can't make a single germane comment to anything I said. The Democrats aren't obstructing change, you idiots, the Rebulicans are. Your points, however accurate or inaccurate they may be, have nothing at all to do with what I said. So it is with all the politeness and good manners that I can muster that I ask you to go f yourselves.

Forgive yourself moonie . You have to much self hate . Let it go . We here all know the Dems . Have control of the white house and both houses. They got Health care threw . So they can get any thing they desire threw . The only think going on here is people labeling Rep as obstructionist. When the dems have the power to overcome any obstruction as the health care bill Proves . Nice try tho . Just let that self hate go moonie . Follow your own advice .

Unfortunatelly, something that should have passed 90-10 now only gets 50-50 simply because of spite. So a trimmed down version still has to bribe its way to a majority vote.

LOL, I'm pretty sure the Republicans think the Democrats are the "cancer" and need to be "cut out".

Weird, I work in the American Cancer Society building in my city, but we have a lot more liberals in my organization.

No, we get 'policies to help the public' versus 'corruption to help the powerful against the public' - and we get ignorant people who say they're the same.

Well, then I guess all political views are equally correct and moral. All parties the same. The Nazis and the Jews were just two equal sides who each claimed to be right.

Indeed, the only right way to vote is randomly, since every law, every ballot initiative, every spending and taxing policy, every war choice, are all the same either way, no difference.

The only purpose for a political discussion forum like this is the same as a football game - to have 'teams' who fight and push for 'their side', and hope blue or red wins, their side.

Well, that's what you do around here. You proclaim yourself omnipotent and declare anyone who disagrees a propagandist of corporate interests.

So, your theory is that if government attempts to responsibly prepare for major threats - natural or man-made - that haven't yet occurred, that's a sign of government out of control? But if our country is blind-sided by a major problem that the government didn't anticipate and isn't able to deal with quickly and effectively, then the government is incompetent?
