Its all fun and games until they realize that all the people who died are actually allergic to cats 😉

This is what went through my mind. Have they ruled out any kind of illness the cat may have and spreading to these people.

Considering that cats are man's oldest companions, I'd say there's a pretty good scientifical explanation for this, although, like A.C. Clarke said, some science is hard to be distinguished from magic.

You just linked to a single controversial study. Not very smart to do when you consider that this disagrees with most other accepted findings.

Apparently dogs can detect cancer in humans, so if cats have been around even longer, they should be able to do it as well.

Your logic makes absolutely no sense at all. None.

Apparently dogs can fetch your morning newpaper, so if dust mites have been around even longer, they should be able to do it as well.

You care about this entirely too much.

How does this happen!? How does a friendly thread turn into a flamewar EVERY time around here. Stop treating the internet like serious business, people!

<walks off grumbling to get a cup of tea>

Can you imagine some old woman in a bed watching the cat walk into her room and jumping up on her bed?

"Nooooo... noooo... I'm not ready, it's not my time. Please leave, bad kitty, bad kitty!"

Not only that but his critical reading skills were not used when reading the link. There is a difference between cats "domesticating themselves" which really means they figured out that living around human agricultural centers was beneficial to them since the small rodents that were their prey flourished there as well. That is much different than the relations between humans and other domesticated animals such as dogs or cows which were in most cases domesticated and bred purposefully by humans from their wild ancestors in the localities that the humans found them in. There are articles out there from this study that go much more in depth on this and they are pretty interesting for those of us that own dogs and cats and enjoy both for their unique qualities.

I hate to break it to you, but that's how dog domestication started as well. They quickly found out that humans generate lots of table scraps, and decided to hang around for easy food. This really isn't any different than many other animals that take advantage of the easy meals left by humans.
