So, the fiance wants a 27" Imac

But Im a big PC gamer and we need to consolidate to only one machine.

I saw they have a gtx 775m for one of their upgraded gpu's. How well does this perform? What discrete card would you compare it to?

BB has them right now for $1850 with the gtx 775m, is this a reasonable price? I haven't done much research on pricing yet.

Even if the 775m performs well, you're not going to get a ton of gaming support. WINE isn't a good alternative. So, gaming isn't going to be very good on any Mac.

I'd suggest you get her something like a MacBook Air or MacBookPro and keep the desktop as a PC.

And why do you "need" to consolidate to only one machine? That seems like a rather silly need. Sounds like someone wants an iMac and is using an excuse to get rid of anything else.

We're moving in to an apartment in downtown Chicago, and space is limited.
She has always wanted an Imac and since we both now have good jobs, she figures its time to get one.

By gaming support do you mean OSX doesn't get a ton of games?

And she won't go for the mac laptops, theyre too small for her.

I'm fairly certain they meant that OS X doesn't get many games, and the ones it does get don't always work well. You can easily dual-boot and play games in Windows though, so that's not really an issue.

Use Boot Camp to set up a Windows boot partition, and game away. It will work fine.

If you got the 27" model with the 780M you'd be doing alright for gaming, it performs at about 50-60% of a 780 desktop card or somewhere in the range of a GTX580. Not too shabby.

Bootcamp and install Windows. It's not a big problem.

I've built my fair share of PCs over the years back in the days, and was on the fence the last time I decided to drop $2000 on one. Contemplated building one or jumping the fence into Apple's lala land. Tired of Windows and wanting a new experience, all I can say is that I'm pleased with the user experience and the flow that OSX offered. The combination of hardware and software integration, and how things all fit together as one unit, was what made the 27" iMac so pleasant to use. No need for dual monitors, no need for a desktop unit, fan noise under control, much cleaner looking work space. It was the whole package that lured me in.

Two years later I'm still happy I made the decision to give the iMac a try. I realize the compromises I would be making prior, but to this day my iMac still puts a smile to my face.

The iMac utilizes desktop CPU and a mobile GPU, for a hardcore gamer I'd recommend getting the fastest video card you can afford. My 2011 iMac is much more user serviceable than the current one that is glued in, so choose your options wisely if you do decide to go this route.

The ability to run bootcamp made the transition bearable.

I'd go the hackintosh route myself, bit of a compromise for you and the wife. She gets Mac OS, and you get the gaming rig.

That said, the GTX 780M is based on a fully enabled desktop GTX 680 with marginally slower clocks on both the GPU and memory. Games like Battlefield 4 should be more than playable on higher settings so long as you back down the AA.

3TB drive and no SSD? Sorry, the experience isn't the same without an SSD. Even an old Macbook Air will run more responsively.

My mid-2011 27" iMac plays games very well when I boot into Windows. It's not going to be the fastest in frame rates, but once you get over the fact that you may not be able to tell the difference between 80 fps and 60 fps, you'll enjoy the games a lot more.

I don't play the latest games though, but with the games I do play, I'm able to play them at native resolution.

The 775m is a pretty powerful GPU- it's the same piece of silicon as a GTX680, but with a few shaders disabled and the clock dropped a bit. It'll be great for gaming, so long as you Boot Camp into Windows 7.
