So the cable guy just replaced my old 3com modem with an RCA one...

Hi Anandtech Networking Community!
I was having problems with my cable connection constantly crapping out and the guy came today and replaced it with an RCA DCM245 cable modem. So far it hasn't crapped out but I'm not very happy. I went to my usual speed test site and instead of getting the 2.4> mbits that I'm used to I got a lousy 1.1 or 1.2!! I thought I heard that the RCA modems were "uncapped" or something like that... I can't find specific drivers for my new modem at the RCA site (the only ones I found were USB cable modem drivers). Any advice? Thanks! 🙂

Firstly most cable companies are going to a tier system for there customers. Are you on this kind of system? These modems are capped by the provider remotely so if you are paying for (whatever MB) and getting less call them. You might also want to reset the modem. I am on charter and they now have 4 different plans, the 1mb is about $80.00.

i think he said in another post he had RR, which doesnt have that. They are planning on charging for extra GB transfers over a certain limit in the near future though.
 
Yep his email is @rr, do they give you some range you are supposed to get, aka if you called them would they recognize that as a problem or not?

Sadly, no. I guess I shouldn't complain... but once I've had faster it's hard to go to slower when I'm paying the same amount.



<< I have the RCA modem and I'm getting the speeds that you were getting with your 3Com modem. If you'd like, you can tweak your registry (Speedguide.net or DSLReports) and that might help you out a little bit. >>


I've done the registry thing and back when I had the 3com it worked WONDERS for my connection. Thanks for the suggestion though. 🙂
