So the Army decided to take money from me

I went online to check my pay today and there was a $1145 deduction from this 2 week period with the only explanation being "Misc Debt". Now I have to go through a lengthy (2-3 week) process to not only find out why they did it, but also to see if I can get it back. How annoying and frustrating!!

My paycheck coming up will be for a whopping $150. Its a good thing that I dont live paycheck to paycheck. Also, I should point out that the only money that I owe anyone or anything is a small amount on my car, on which I'm ahead on my payments, leaving me no other unaccounted debt.

wtf? why would they do that...?

One of the things I loved about navy payroll is when you were overpaid, they wanted their money that second. If they underpaid you, prepare to wait a month.

That sucks.

I have a friend who works for DFAS at their Cleveland facility... he says this kind of stuff is quite common....

I was under the impression that they couldn't garnish more than 1/3 of your monthly wages at one time....or is that just in the Army?

Oh...and as for underpaid...I personally had to wait about 6 months for back payments when I was mistakenly listed as the wrong rank.

My guess is that they overpaid you in the past - or at least they think they did. Now they are just making it up. I had a similar thing happen when I was in the Air Force - they screwed up my time in grade at one point. When they caught it I got a letter explaining it the week before they docked me about 2 weeks pay! That kinda sucked.

Anyway, get over to personell and figure it out. Don't expect it to be straight forward - the military pay and benefits system is byzantine.

just remember no matter what you tell them it will not be your fault and you do in fact owe them money. In fact, they may realize that you owe them quite a bit more than originally thought.
