Hold on a second - if the 8800 Ultra was twice as powerful as the 8800GTX, it would be the greatest video card of all time. $830 would be a steal for that price.

We all like small and efficient video cards, but when it comes down to it, I think people who buy these high-end cards in general would prefer a faster, larger card than a slower, smaller card.

even if ATI's high end are a bit slower maybe you can save $100 or more. Whats two more weeks. If you got plenty money to spend I say go for it. But if you don't you might be kicking yourself in two weeks. At least if you wait you will know for sure.

Im not so sure about that. G98 is already listed in the leaked drivers. nVIDIA may well be moving directly to 65nm, and skipping 80nm all together for G80. But time will tell.

There's another thing nVidia and ATI need to do. Instead of making cards bigger and better they need to work on making them smaller and better. The cards are outgrowing the case limitations. A good example is the G80 cards. Specifically the 8800GTX. Its a monster of a card in size and it wont fit in alot of cases. This isnt good for the consumer. The manufacturers need to start microsizing their products. Alot of other industries have done it and I think its time video card makers seriously consider doing the same.

Since when is ANY corporation "generous"? You want to see greed? Then let me direct your attention to the RIAA or MPAA. My sister has an internet radio station, and if I told you what the RIAA is trying to pull off, you'd go and throw dead animals on the CEO's front lawn.

But yes, the Ultra is not needed. The GTX is PLENTY quick and only a scooch away from Ultra speeds. The Ultra should be priced maybe 50.00 more than the GTX ONLY because it carries the faster GDDR3 at 0.8ns. Higher clock potential there. But that is it. The cores are A3 as opposed to A2. Not at all sure if that is much of an improvement or not. Who knows. Definitely not a 400.00 improvement though. That is for sure.

First place you'll see 65nm from Nvidia is in notebook graphics.

I have a Opteron 170 + R580 CF mobo + 2GB PC4000 and I dont even think I could upgrade to a C2D + DS3 +2GB DDR2 for $35 net.

... and my 1.5GB PC3500 should get ~$100 as it is "premium" and OCs very nicely ... DDR1 prices have not fallen thru the floor like DDR800 did
... so 1.5GB of the old for 2 GB of the new ... and the buyer of my RAM will get a good deal [it's all 'lifetime']

and i dunno, Matt2 ... that C2D is only $116, my ASrock $25 and the 2x1GB PC6400 is $109 .... $250 at the 'Egg [1.1% off]

that is *damn cheap*

Not sure why everyone says the ultra is a waste. It does seem to use a bit less power per clock. Maybe the price will be less than expected.
