So...the 2001FP/2005FPW...I don't get it.

What use is the 2005FPW as a widescreen?

I don't see it.

At least not for any editing type stuff. The 2001FP's better for that.

2001FP = 1.92 Million Pixels
2005FPW = 1.764 Million Pixels

They are pretty much the same price.

But....my 2001FP is better than the widescreen 2005FPW. It has more space and a better aspect ratio for editing work on photos and such. The 2405FPW on the other hand would be awesome. It has a lot more pixels on the width wise than the 2001FP, but still has 1200 pixels in height.

widescreen is great for gaming/watching dvd's, opening 2 windows side by side, its not only about number of pixels

OdiN is only looking at the numbers part of the deal, not at the aesthetics. I'm taking a break right now from writing a research paper on my 2005FPw ... on the left is MSWord, on the right is FireFox. I also watched 24 in HD tonight on this screen. Very minimal black bar-age on the top and bottom. Good use of the screen.

I'm not saying widescreen itself is bad, just that the 2005FPW doesn't make sense.

I would love a 2405FPW.

When you are editing 8+MP photos, 1920 pixels wide is great. But 1050 pixels tall on the 2005FPW is not so great...and it's only 80 pixels wider than a 2001FP.

I couldn't fit word/firefox on a single monitor with only 1680 pixels in width...and I don't like tiling programs side by side like that either.

I do have dual 2001FP's so I have plenty of screen space and prefer seperate programs on seperate monitors.

Maybe it's just me

I've never used that mode for anything.

Have you ever used a widescreen? Because portrait mode is useless on a 4:3 or 5:4.

I'd take dual 2001FPs over one 2005FPw anyday. But I can only afford one monitor.

I have, but I have never found a use for portrait mode for anything.

I suppose it may be nice to edit a portrait-oriented photo, but usually most of the time editing portraits is spent on retouching the face.

Yeah...I want to put a 2405FPW between these two :p

For browsing, gaming etc., a 4:3 is still theoretically better, only because it does feature more usable pixels.
But considering the fact that the 2005FPW still has the size of a 4:3 17" LCD monitor if you crop the sides, I find it big enough for any 4:3 activity.

What it does better, though, is work applications. I simply CAN NOT use a 4:3 for programming anymore, won't work. After you get used to having a project bar + source file + header file all spread out conveniently on the same display, you just can't go back.
I guess that it's useful for picture editing, word processing and all of these too.
Honestly, the 2005FPW is the smallest widescreen I'd go with, but it doesn't say the screen is a compromise.

I'd like to try the 2405 (or the new 2407) sometime, though. Could be nice.

GoBadgrs has that setup. I envy him. 5120x1200 resolution.

The widescreen would really be helpful in my photo editing.

Shots out of my camera print at 8x12 so it's a bit on the wide size compared to a more square 8x10.

When I was doing web work I had stuff on one monitor and preview of it on the second - really helpful.

2005FPW = idiotically newbish.

Seriously, you have a monitor that's only as tall as a 17" LCD. That's why I'm happier with a 19".

If you talk about the 2405, that's totally different. Now that's a good widescreen monitor.

If you talk about 2001 vs 2005, its 2001 the winner. 1600x1200? Wow.

Sigh.... I have a 17" 1701FP side by side with a 2005FPW. It's beautiful. [][__] , and plenty of real-estate for everything...

IMHO, if you can't afford a 2405 AND a 2001fp or 1905fp, dual a 17 and a 2005. the dual monitors make up for the small loss in real-estate. Honestly, I don't know what I ever did with only 1 17" monitor.

Working on my 12" notebook, and trying to multitask can be tough to get used to after weeks on my dual - setup.

As far as being n00bish, well....gg on that 6" of black-bars when you watch movies. I see an inch on my 2005.

This is what I was doing all last night, and something tells me 4:3 just wouldn't cut it :p

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/fbrdphreak/widescreen_ftw.jpg

That said, I did find the DPI on the 2005 a little disappointing when I got it. I think the 2005 @ 1920x1200 would rock, maybe 21-22". I don't mind a 24", but don't want to pay the money for a huge screen; I prefer resolution ;)

I'd love dual 2005's tho :D Watching a gorgeous movie on one, working/gaming on the other :)

I love my 2405FPW. If I want to sit down and have a good read of Slashdot, I go into portrait mode.
