So someone hit my bro's car in a parking lot...

Talking to him, sounds like no dents but 3 or so 2x2 areas of paint missing. He says obviously a white car.

Curious, what does one do in this situation? How much does it cost to get something like this repaired and is it worth filing with insurance?

Extra info said below: Hit back bumper. Paint is gone in 3 2x2 in sections or so. Silver Grand Am GT(2001). Allstate insurance.

does he have comp and collision insurance on his car?

has he gotten an estimate on how much it would cost to repair the damage?

Does he have full coverage? If he does then he should call his insurance company. Someone hit my car in the parking lot a few months back. I called my insurance (Allsate) told them what happened. They told me to fax them 2 estimates and in a few days I had my car fixed. Premium didnt go up.

At least his car has no dents. Some a$$hat with an truck or SUV hit my car in the school parking lot, and left a huge dent. People who hit parked cars should learn how to park!

Its Allstate insurance

EDIT: Sorry about the double post, he isn't too happy as you can expect so trying to get him info ASAP.

Should he even bother reporting it? Considering its on a college campus...

Depends on how good condition the car was in before it happened IMO... a paint streak can often be removed with rubbing compound & further, every claim you make with your insurance counts against you regardless if it leads to a direct rate hike or not. I'm sure his collision will cover the damage, but the question is wether its worth it or not.

Edit: Btw, just about any accident in a parking lot is considered "no-fault"

There is paint missing...not just paint rubbed off onto the car.

Ouch... In that case its primer & a lot of touch-up paint which will look ok from a distance but not so hot up close, or the body shop... another thing to consider is if he's made any other claims on his insurance in the last few years, if not it likely won't go up this time, but it will be held against him by the bean-counters at renewal time.

how much is your deductible?

Honestly I don't know right now, I don't drive here so I don't have to worry about that. I will try to get this info.

He has a clean driving record and no claims on his insurance.

Then the deductable is the most important question... if its $1000 then forget it & $500 I'd think twice about as well with no significant dent, just tell him to make sure he covers any bare metal before it can start to rust.
Also note that a clean driving record with zero insurance claims is worth thousands over a few years.

Well if he plans on going through insurance, a police report would help. If he is going to go that route, he needs to contact the police ASAP. Where I'm at, we usually cant/wont help a person if they move their car or wait to long to report.
