The pixel wars are starting to get a bit out of hand.

Like it or not, 4K smartphone displays are heading towards us, and there's nobody left to stop them! After Samsung casually hinted at 4K AMOLED displays for the upcoming Galaxy Note 5, Japanese purveyor of IGZO screens and border-less smartphones Sharp climbed on the stage to announce the world's first 5.5-inch mobile display with a 2160 x 3840 pixels Ultra-HD (4K) resolution. The panel is scheduled for mass production in 2016, and comes with a mind-boggling pixel density of 806 pixels per inch.

Millions of batteries and mobile GPUs cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. All for what will amount to little if any perceivable difference over 1080p displays.

That'd go great with a dock with a magnifying lens to let you do something like the Surface dock lets you do now but with a considerably smaller screen. Can't think of any other use for it.

Only reason why this might be mildly useful is if you are using your phone in a VR headset, where the screen is an inch from your face and split into two mini displays.

But it's getting dumb I agree. I can't even really see the difference between the 1080p and 1440p display. No idea why I'd ever need a 2160p display on a phone or even a tablet.

This probably won't be a selling point and I might even consider it a negative point when buying my next phone since I know it will come at a cost to processing power and battery life.

I think this is more of an announcement of technological achievement. It does not mean it will make it into phones in 2016, and obviously will have to prove itself to be worth the cost. In any case we all knew this was coming. (lol) Though I admit that this is A LOT sooner than anticipated.

Kind of wish this kind of accelerated development of display tech had occurred many years ago on PC monitors when 2560x1600/30" monitors were rarities until recently.
