So Republicans in congress wish to defund the FDA?...

That darn useless FDA... who needs em? 😀

FDA: Moldy applesauce repackaged by school lunch supplier

A Washington state fruit processor that supplies the nation’s schools and a baby food maker is under scrutiny by federal health regulators for repackaging applesauce contaminated with several kinds of potentially dangerous, multi-colored molds, msnbc.com has learned.

Products recalled earlier this year by Snokist were blamed for illnesses of nine North Carolina children who became sick after eating applesauce at school.

http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2...pplesauce-repackaged-by-school-lunch-supplier

You can't make this stuff up.... The quotes:

compromised bags were bloated and one had “a strong fermented odor,”

The inspection report said Snokist documents showed the company had reprocessed mold-contaminated applesauce at least 13 times between January 2008 and May 2011, repackaging food into 15-ounce cans, 106-ounce-cans, 300-gallon bags and 4.2-ounce, single-serve cups.

Now it gets even more crazy...

Snokist officials admit that they “rework” some moldy food for future use. But in an e-mail to msnbc.com, company officials said that the contaminated fruit represents only a fraction of the company’s products, that compromised product is typically separated and destroyed, and that any reprocessed food is heat-treated to kill toxins.

oh.... Ok..... 😀

A 2009 consultant’s report showed that the types of molds in the Snokist fruit products included Alternaria, Fusarium and two types of Pennicillium, all of which can cause illness in people.
Oooh... Sound yummy Mr Cantor? Mr Boehner?

That report was commissioned by Snokist after a baby-food manufacturer returned dozens of bags of the company’s fruit product in 2009 because they were contaminated with “a large amount of mold,” according to the FDA inspection report.

And.... The grand Finale...

In early 2010, the consultant recommended six steps that Snokist could take to fix the problems, but during the FDA’s June inspection, company officials said they’d implemented only two.

Remember... vote republican in 2012... 😀 😀 😀
(and avoid applesauce, water, breathing, food, and basically ever going outside)

The corporations know exactly what they are doing....anything and everything to increase revenues. They don't care if people die, they really don't care. Let me repeat this, they don't care if people die.

Until Conservatives wake up and realize they are being played by a party that continually does things that are NOT in their best interest the rest of the country is completely screwed.

Thankfully the Republicans are so far to the right these days they have no chance in hell of winning a general election. The Southern Strategy is dying.

The Southern Strategy is dying.

The GOP cannot exist @ it does now in 20 years when 30% of their voter base is dead. Hell, probably from the GOP cutting their social security benefits and giving big pharma free reign to poison them with no oversight.

So let me get this straight. Mold was found in 2009 in shipped product, the company comissioned its own report, and at the end of 2011 the FDA is finally addressing concerns? The FDA does what exactly? Clearly didnt prevent this and clearly didnt address it until after the company did its own report nearly 2 years later.

I am not against the FDA, but the blind faith many people have in it is absurd. The OP's own link shows how the FDA did nothing to prevent this situation. And its investigation took nearly 2 years to even send a warning letter.

It's an organization that sucks sometimes. I mean it's the government, it's got to be inefficient, slow as hell, etc.

Is your solution to just get rid of it? Hardly intelligent in anyway you look @ it.

Crack some skulls, analyze, consult, reign in waste, etc., etc.

We're talking about the FDA that blocks a number of anti-venoms from being used in the US for some of the most deadly snake bites [in the US], right?

Thought so.

They, like most federal agencies, suck MOST of the time. The regulate shit they have no business regulating and allow stuff that shouldn't be allowed...to even occur in the first place.

The Republicans want to deregulate any Legislation that would impede a profit...PERIOD and if that takes out a few innocent people along the way who gives a shit!

So, the FDA was instrumental in preventing this. No. They quickly found out about this and took effective steps to fix the issue. No. In essence, the FDA did nothing useful in this case.

The FDA in concept is a good and necessary thing... but in practice is't like just about all government agencies: slow, ineffective, bloated, expensive, corrupted etc. I don't favor simply defunding it outright, I'd like to see a major overhaul. I haven't seen anyone calling for simply getting rid of it without some sort of replacement.

I was not aware that the traditional Republican establishment wishes to end the FDA. Although, I do not doubt it is minor objective of fringe Libertarian elements within the party.

The GOP cannot exist @ it does now in 20 years when 30% of their voter base is dead.

The Democratic Party will be socially conservative by that time or somewhat after, although they will be the same or further left when it comes to fiscal issues. Hispanics and Blacks tend to be more socially conservative than whites. Assuming current demographic trends hold, Hispanics and Blacks will take control of the Democratic party and replace the establishment with more like minded politicians (the current establishment is supported because fiscal issues are prioritized over social issues).

FDA shut down isn't listed in the talking points. Though there is mention of an EPA shutdown and lynching of the directors.

FDA is constrained by lawyers and politicians.
There are two functions here.
Eliminating the fact finding and inspections because politically appointed administrators and legal considerations restrict action is just "foolish".
It is not and never will be a perfect world, law, or administration.
Eliminating funding is the GOP answer to removing majority laws and agencies it does not like.

No offense, but you don't seem to get it. The more government there is, the more there is for corporations to take advantage of. CCA (lots of victimless crimes prosecuted), the MIC (lots of war legislated), Medicare Part D, patents, the list goes on.

Also, as others pointed out, central planning neither can nor will prevent this and the Republican establishment would never get rid of the FDA.

Agreed.

FDA good. Corrupted FDA bad. Attacking corruption by demanding closure - often the same people behind the corruption - instead of removing corruption bad.

The state is corrupt by it's very nature. How in the hell is a democracy going to keep Big Pharma out of the FDA?

The simple answer is that a nationally centralized democracy can't.

No that has to do with their paranoia for a grope check.

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Let's play guess who said it. Hint: It was published in 1759.

So the Republican solution is to completely get rid of it.

And you wonder why you are laughed at by the majority of the world.

No, some Republicans proposed to defund some of the FDA discretionary funding that was recently added in a bill passed at the end of last year. The new bill is estimated to cost $1.4 billion over five years and would strengthen the regulatory hand of the FDA.

Same old song and dance. De-fund the FDA, EPA, SEC, FBI, CDC and the rest, then bitch because they can't do the job, offer that they really just need to be eliminated instead.

They're all obviously "anti-bidness", anyway. There's a fortune to be made in innovative cosmetic & medicinal products, just like innovative financial products, too...
