So, Peter Parker is dead. Dead dead, not coming back dead.

Meet Miles Morales, half African-American, half Latino. Or is that half American, 1/4 African, 1/4 Latino?

In the Ultimate Universe of Marvel Comics, Peter Parker -- the original alter ego of Spider-Man -- is dead, and his replacement is a half-African-American, half-Latino teenager named Miles Morales.

"Miles is on the same journey of self discovery (as Peter Parker), he's nerdy, is good at math, and lives with his parents in Brooklyn," he said.

Peter Parker, a white orphan from Queens, died in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #160 fighting his arch-enemy, Green Goblin.

"He died a hero, he died fulfilled," Alonso said. "He's really dead too, not come-back-to-life dead," he added, referring to the occasional propensity in the comic-book genre for reviving supposedly dead characters.

Hmm. My take, Peter Parker will always be Spiderman. Not to be racist or insulting, but it does seem like every comic super hero gets 're-invented' into a multi-racial character for the 21st century. It just smells of political correctness. Create new characters with multi-ethnic backgrounds, is that so hard?

Marvel released the first Ultimate Marvel imprint of comic books in 2000. The Ultimate imprint is an alternate world from Marvel's regular universe, where Parker is still alive and fighting.

So it doesn't even matter, hell I remember a lot of those "what if" version comic books where they kill off random heroes and such so no one will really care.

This was probably one of my favorite cover ones:

Wouldn't it be less insane to interpret this as a business decision--you know, access a new audience--rather than some half-baked claims of political correctness?

Because people who didn't read comic books before are going to now that he is 1/2 latino?

well, Beast is alive (lame), and Prof X.

only big loss would have been Marvel Girl/Jean Grey.

I didn't say it would work, but dumbasses behind desks make these assumptions all the time. :D

but, in reality, these characters and stories are bigger than they ever were before, thanks to the movies.

considering that this is a separate universe that doesn't matter (hell, they had other universes before this ultimate one with various versions of those characters), they probably looked at the demographics of the new movie-based fans and want to appeal to them.

...and I do know for a fact, that a few friends of mine back in the day listed some of their favorite comic book heroes--rather lame ones, at that; and I asked, "Why them?"

"because he was the only black super hero."

What's wrong with liking a hero because you identify yourself with him/her because of same race/cultural background/upbringing?

Imagine you are white and live in Africa where it has all black superheroes. As a kid, you see a white superhero from LA, just like you. So you like him. Is there a prob?

It's a god damn comic book, not picking a politician over their skin color.

the ultimate universe is bad...very bad. they have to pull stunts like this to get people interested in it.

Parker is alive and well in the reg series (though they have messed it up a lot).

I've never really been into comics, but how the hell did this guy get Spiderman's powers?

That takes PC to whole new levels.

And I can't wait for the new spiderman to flop, hard. I don't even read comics or much care about them, but this is some of the worst PC crap I've ever seen, so I hope it falls hard.
