So now that I have vista should I just dump my audigy 2?

My understanding is that it is pretty much worthless in vista since the hal layer is gone. My mobo supports onboard sound using:

SigmaTel STAC9227

I am wondering if that will now work better than the audigy.

That's a bad idea Xarick. Embebed sound solutions like that sigmatel IC will bring you worse sound quality and worse gaming perfomance too, since 3d sound libraries will use CPU resources for sound processing. EAX works fine on those dedicated sound cards because its processors are just created for that task.

Wait for alchemy project from Creative Labs. They've promised new drivers compatible with OpenAL, the legacy audio API of Windows Vista.

Take a look:

I hope the update will be free and won't cost us more money.

Bye!

Depends on quality of the onboard sound and your speakers I guess,Creative are working on Alchemy software for the Audigy series but you'll going to have to pay for that.

I'm using my Audigy 4 card in Vista x64 at the moemnt ,but my next upgrade I'm gonig to get a motherboard with HD onboard sound.

In the real world cpu usage with software sound is around 5% or so ,which is low.

Mine has two layers :)
My understanding is that alchemy will only be for the x-fi series.

I dont know anything about sigmatel stac9227 I can't find anything anywhere that tells me of the quality.

I was hoping someone knew.
But without EAX and hardware support the card is just useless isn't it? Since now all the sound is running software mode.
