The Ryzen gaming benches so far were quite a shocker. My 1800X and Crosshair pre-orders haven't shipped yet, so I have a bit of a dilemma as I can still cancel them and reverse course to go 7700K. I do need to rebuild something as my current machine can't last much longer.

Am interested in some genuine advice on which route to take. To be clear, I'm not viewing Ryzen itself as a failure and I was prepared to give up small amount of performance for more cores. But if it's getting slaughtered in gaming, that makes me question things. Gaming is the most intensive thing I do but I also like to keep computers for a long time.

Any context you guys can provide on your votes would be appreciated.

What do you use your PC for? Where do you see your system performing later this year? Next year?

Cancel the 1800X, buy the 1700, keep it for few years, and then you can eBay the CPU and upgrade to next generation Ryzen CPU that has compatibility with X370.

And one more thing. Update your BIOS of the Motherboard ASAP, as it is released.

Yeah I'd just go for the 1700 and a good cooler. 1800x seems like it's aimed at people that don't want to overclock themselves.

Haha that's why I went 1800X--I didn't want to OC myself anymore. Given that piece of info, is the vote still 1700? Also, no votes for jumping ship back to Intel, right?

If you plan on gaming at really low settings with little to no eye candy then get the 7700k. There really doesn't look like there is a gaming issue unless one induces it.

I'm not in the market but if I was I'd be leaning towards the Ryzen cpu's.

3440X1440. I do plan to get either Vega if that's good or 1080/1080TI depending on prices later.

Looks like the voting is pretty unanimous so far. I guess I mostly needed a talking to.

For your use isn't it better just to upgrade your GPU? Once you upgrade to any new platform your GPU will still be the bottleneck, even though it's still a decent one.

I would. My motherboard is dying (only 3 of the remaining USB ports work and I'm getting some other weird issues too). Hence, I need to rebuild.

Well the gaming issues only seem to exist at 1080p so I would definitely go for the 1800x if you game at that resolution and don't want to overclock.

I'd go 7700K if your concern is immediate gaming and a broader range of motherboards/features to choose from. For long-term value, go Ryzen (1700 or 1800X, though personally I'd go 1700).

The gaming issues only exist at 1080p low settings or below.

Once you go to 1080p ultra or higher, it is competitive.

Doesn't seem like 1800X has more than a few 100MHz maximum additional headroom over the 1700, so you can downgrade to that if you prefer.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the advice given here. I'm less concerned about cost between 1700 and 1800x. I guess I was just a bit shellshocked when the initial reports were murder haha...

Are you having problems with your current system that prevents you from being happy to keep it?

As Zen is all over the place for gaming, I would be inclined to see what Skylake-X brings.

I'd keep the 1800x. My read of the gaming benchmarks is:
It looks like if you turn off SMT / stick to 8 real cores while gaming , you will be good to go.
Use the money you save for a better GPU , where game matter more anyhow.
