So Netflix's Marco Polo

Bateluer

Lifer
Just finished the first episode. Acting quality seems decent, budget and product values seem decent. Pretty sure I'm going to have to suspend a lot of disbelieve though; didn't Polo pretty much make up everything?

Been binge watching it the last couple of days, it's not bad, i'm not expecting historical accuracy

I like it. It's not Breaking Bad good but it's good. They are trying to capture the Game of Thrones audience with all that nudity they keep throwing around. Not a single episode goes by without nudity. lol

I noticed a couple sex scenes in the pilot that really didn't seem to fit or add anything to the story. I'm all for titties though.

It's been a long time since I read his account, or what passes for it, but I recall there being some ribald parts in India and elsewhere. He had experiences.

Watched the first episode last night. Sort of meh. I was put off to begin with by the disjointed way they played catch-up on the early part of his travel narrative. From there the story just seemed to jump around from one violin-soaked scene to another: throne room, foggy street, soldiers, asian chick humping guy, throne room, soldiers, foggy street, humping, soldiers, foggy street. And I can't understand why one of the mongol generals in the last scene looks like David Arquette.

I watched the first episode and my first reaction was "oh, they're copying Game of Thrones." It does look very well shot though for a Netflix Original. IGN said it gets better two after the first four episodes. Shows like need to find their grounding.

I'm also all for naked Asian women but the nudity seems a bit over done.

The first episode was awful. I'm not sure who wrote this thing but the writing is terrible. Does it get better?

There is so much jumping around.. and I despise time-warping. 50% of scenes that have no significance or meaning.

The costumes are great though. Acting seems reasonable but is nothing worth noting.

I don't understand how horses and their riders manage to see through clouds of dust that appear every time they move slightly though.

In my opinion, not enough back-story on Khan. A lot of people have a basic understanding of who he is but no real understanding of his culture.

Also, I don't understand this part:

Khan: I brought you to my whore house so that I can make you leave my whore house. Don't touch my whores or I'll kill you.

Polo: Ok. I don't want to die so I'll leave the whore house.

*Polo gets mobbed by naked women. Leaves whore house without touching them. End of episode.

WTF?

Ha, yeah, that was pretty much my take on that scene, and the whole episode. But I still like the non mongol-looking guy sitting on his horse and saying "We must attack like Genghis would!" in his fake gravelly mongol voice.

That. I checked out the first episode because it looked like a good T&A show and even with the T&A it was unwatchable. Really dull, badly written, badly acted.

In fact, Marco Polo never actually existed.

I forget what it's called, but there is a documentary--also on Netflix--that illuminates the actual historical record and literature that references Marco Polo, and in great detail.

It seems that he was, undeniably, a fabrication.

His legacy is so ingrained, though, that I doubt this will set in any time soon.

Oh, here it is:

I'm a few episodes in now, and I've two observations.

1) I've no problems with the violence or the sexual content, though the hashish laden kaleidoscope vision quest sex scene that Polo goes through made me blink. The only parts that make my shudder and cringe are Chancellor Jia Sidao breaking his niece's feet to bind them. You sick SOB.

2) Claudia Kim/Khutulun is the hottest woman on this show and a badass to boot. Hoping to see more of her.

Just watched the first episode, and I have to say it is not bad, not bad at all. Looking forward to the rest of the season, and I see some binge watching in my holiday vacation coming soon!

It's pretty meh. I've watched through episode 4. I don't feel like the characters have much depth and the 4th episode seemed to just drag on.

What I'm getting from this thread is that the show is a 6/10. Skippable.

Not a bad summation. I'm half way through episode 4 now. I'll probably finish it, but I only watch while I work out.

Who said this is game of thrones is partly right. It wants to be, but GOT it ain't. It's even got the cliched nudity now, which just feels so forced and obvious now in the way they've done it. On one episode there is a lot of full frontal as naked girls stand up to be rated for a brothel. They also have, and this is really embarrassing, a guy who is literally blind and yet a super martial arts master. How they put him in without blushing is beyond me. This isn't 1985. Are we still at the point where we assume asians are basically ninjas?

Khan is very well played.

They tried to be the Game of Thrones of Netflix and forgot the great storyline, excellent acting and awesome costumes/props. Tits and violence can only get you so far.

Watched the first couple of episodes. Horrible. Even the T&A can't possibly make up for the horrible writing and acting. It's not even remotely close to GoT, it's like the cinemax version of a real movie.
