So my upstairs neighbors were stealing my cable/internet

So a few nights ago I was online doing homework when I hear some kind of noise outside my window. I didn't really go outside and look around because it was 2:30am, I was hella-tired and I also assumed the noise was coming through the vent from the furnace in the basement.

Next day I wake up and have no internet or cable tv. I called my isp and talked to them and they sent someone out this morning to check it out. Come to find out, my upstairs neighbors in my apartment building were stealing my cable/internet. They weren't even sneaky about it either. They just disconnected my lines completely and then plugged themselves in. Dumbasses! Like I wouldn't notice... I even heard them outside my window when they were doing it at 2:30 in the morning (My desk is right next to the building's cable connection box on the other side of the wall).

Yeah so I hope my isp does something about it, plus I plan to talk to my land lord and have them booted.

Has this happened to anyone else here before? What did your isp do about it? I'm not that upset but I know its definitely a crime and I lost two days of internet which I need to do all my University work through. Kinda annoying.

You're suppose to call the police non-emergency number and report their ass. ISP and phone companies don't do shit.

They may have been stealing your line for the TV but it would be impossible to steal the internet unless they had your exact modem or if they had a modem of their own that was registered with the cable company.

It pisses you off even more than they were stealing something that you never use?

Has the thought of stopping your cable TV service ever occurred to you? :p

It pisses him off that their intentions were to just take the cable, which he doesn't use, but they took his internet as well (and couldn't use it), and he needed it.

They should have just put a splitter on it, no one would have found out until the next time the cable guy came out there to hook up / disconnect someone. That being said, nail them for being so blatantly stupid about it.

So I got bored last night and decided I'd try and steal my neighbors cable connection. That tool was actually sitting in the room with the window that looks directly out on the cable box and still didn't catch me doing it.

I think I'm gonna try stealing some gas out of his car tomorrow while he's sitting in it.

Bring a gun and tell them to connect you back up or you will blow their fucking brains out, with a gun.

hey asshat, the window is high from the ground and you cant actually see the cable box from that extreme angle or even someone standing at it. I did try looking out my window but it was 2:30 and dark which made it really hard to see ;)

In my college apartment building all the cable connections were in a large metal cabinet in the stairwell. The cabinet had no lock on it, so we opened it up and split someone elses cable connection to ours. Free cable for the entire year!

I was wondering: does that affect internet bandwidth?

Why would they? It might reduce their signal quality while watching Desperate Housewives.

Well...

The cable has a limit to its bandwidth. So take 1 user to have 10 mb/s and they get 10 mb/s. 2 users get 5 mb/s, 3 get 3.33 mb/s, 4 get 2.5 mb/s, etc.

So yes more users affects bandwidth :)
