I think i spend up a good 60-70 hours a week at my computer.

But I spend 90% of that time doing something productive, or at least trying to.
I rarely play games, and I do enjoy those weeks that I don't have to spend most of my time at the computer.
I'm not here cause I want to be.

The difference is I'm on the computer doing non-productive stuff like playing games and surfing the internet. If the computer was my source of income then of course it would be much different. I think I'm on too much especially since it cuts into my sleep, and other activites. Hell I don't go out anymore. I think i need to cut back and I need to find some moderation to my computer usage.

Maybe I should cut back to 2-3 hours per day and maybe I should take one day to rest and that day would be computer free. The problem is when i'm on the computer the times just melts away. 3 hours on the compuer feels like 20 minutes.

It's only an addiction if it gets in the way of your real life. If you, say, have a good chance at hot nookie with someone you find attractive and you pass or miss it because you've got to play through this last level of Doom 3, then you're addicted.

I'm a CS major; I spend that easily on my computer, if not more, but it's my chosen field of study to stay in front of a computer all day. It all depends on the context.
You're talking in the immediate term though...

Add up the time you spend doing leisure stuff on the computer across several months and there are lots of things you could have done...

In my lesiure time I read books, play video games, get drunk with my friends and bang my girlfriend. I'll admit i do spend a legitimate amount of free time at the computer, but after enough time, I just get tired of it and I can't stand it anymore.
This was actually the general "you." I suppose I should have used "one" rather than "you"

I guess if it's your job, you get sick of it easier...Just like you'll never see me go camping 😉

If you count f@pping as productive... then I'm up there too!

fapping doesnt count, cause if it were for computers i'd find other ways to fap.

Hey, a Macy's underwear catalogue!

I spend 40 hours a week in front of a CAD terminal, then I come home and spend 2-3 hours per night on the internet. BUT, I spend 6 hours a week at the gym, I work on my truck, I work on our house, and I bang my wife regularly. The only negative is that I am now near-sided.

True, everyone's case is different. I think there is a serious problem in today's society computers, (this thread for instance) and I think its going to get worse as time goes by in the younger generations, especially since they're sticking a computer in every classroom they can find.

Do you guys agree? My computer usage equals a full time job for christ sakes!

🙁

I have computer addiction and I blame the computer and gaming industry for getting me hooked.

And, so what?

I mean, who cares if you spend all DAY on the computer?

Is the only point of life to be some corporate drone slaving away making stembolts for the economy or something? Or popping out kid after kid to boost the population?

I mean, what really MATTERS that you should be doing instead?

Hell, even the 'n00kie' posts are only half true - what if you really just aren't interested in anything but playing around on the PC and 'net? What's wrong with doing that instead of watching idiot TV shows/drinking beers watching sports/hanging out at bars/etc?

Point of life is to have FUN, man, however you do that is what you should be spending your time doing - not judging yourself based on what OTHER people think you should be doing!

read the first few posts in this thread then i thought about my experience with them have been. Right behind lawyers. There opinions are like assholes...everybody has one. They are there to make money and if by chance they help you so be it. Not much faith in their expertise (but that is limited to my experience with them). I am quite sure there are good ones out there just like there are good priests in our world.

Probably true.

He wants you to have some "HUGE problem" so he has something to treat you over that you can keep coming back to him weak after weak for.

So... you spend 6 hours a day in front of the computer, where arguably, even in this forum, you probably learn something...

What about all the fatasses who sit on the couch for 6 hours a day watching television?

Well, that's okay, see, because the commercials are brainwashing you to spend, spend, spend and continue feeding corporate America.

Sitting on a computer....doesn't do that. Oh, sure, you'll feel the need to upgrade your hardware every now and then - but a video card is only $200 for a decent one, and you replace that, what, every year?

They'd much rather you watch all the trendy people on TV who spend $300 per shopping trip per week and try to emulate THAT behavior (using credit cards if needed) instead.

Computer is my facet to the outside world. I have to check e-mail constnatly, print out homework, and chat with friends on AIM. That and my desk to do work is where my computer is, so its uselful 😉

I just hate Anandtech and wih I never learned of offtoppic. I used to spend about an hour a day just browing general hardware and now i do about 1.5 a peice on PN and OT. Then again I am out everday from 10-8 or so...but when i sit down work just doesn't get down at a fast enough pace 😉
Okay from now on I won't visit here for more than 15 min a day!!! I shall report my progress in a month 😉

I spend... Virtually every waking moment of my life interacting with a computer in some way. I am NOT addicted. Give me something better to do, and I'll gladly do it.

Aha too funny, tec699... If you go to a counselor who tells you that you have an obsession with the computer, and then have come home and post this thread, I think you have answered your own question 😀
