It boots up fine. However, once I get in a game(specifically, NFS:MW), it freezes after 30seconds or so. Any ideas what would cause this? I THINK its a GPU, but I haven't kept up on the 360. I'd like to fix it so I can give it to my little brother since I just bought an Arcade.

Hush. I'm caffeine deficient this morning. :p

<cough><ahem>

Do the X-Clamp mod. Just google it as there's lot of information out there on how to do it.

I had a launch 360 that would freeze in certain games but not others... NFS:MW was one that it did freeze a lot on.

I'm going to bet your hardware scaler is going to fail eventually (what happened to me... only one red light), which really makes sense. Different games output different resolutions that work the scaler differently. I couldn't figure out why something like Gears of War would almost never freeze, however NFS:MW would freeze like crazy. My guess is that since every game may render internally at different resolutions, the scaler can be worked harder to convert some odd resolution to 720p as opposed to a game that outputs native HD resolutions.

If its a scaler issue, is there any fix for that? Not really sure what x clamp fixes...

My xbox did the same exact thing, I looked online and a majority of people with freezing xbox's said theirs eventually RROD'd after 2 weeks. 2 weeks later, my xbox RRODs.

I just called my Gamestop and they're only giving $80 for a 20GB 360 and 1 Wireless Controller. What are you talking about?

the OP's system is on the verge of death. Other than finding a way to force to the get the RROD and get MS to fix it assuming it less than 3 y/o , 80s bucks is better than nothing.
It'll be even less when the price cut hits.

Which would mean it would be $120 + tax to replace it. Seems to me like having it repaired would be cheaper.

It's a launch 360 so it is out of the three year warranty period more than likely. He can either (going from cheapest to most expensive) repair it himself, find someone to repair it for him, pay MS to repair it, or get an Arcade 360.

The solution is to import a Japanese Playstation 3?

Sorry, I am in Japan right now and that is what came up in my search. But that changes nothing. People should punish MS for making shitty electronics, not reward them by getting another shitty XBOX.

b) That's one of the most expensive solutions, especially considering he'd have to trade in all of his games and start over.

He can sell his games to the anti-digital delivery luddites that post here. Besides, that solution will serve his family well. The XBOX 360 is a shit toy and Live is infested with children. This is the worst of all worlds. Also, considering Sony's vast library and future-proof design, the PS3 offers enough to compensate the loss from losing the terrible XBOX 360.

Sony's vast library? Maybe for the PS2, but not the fucking PS3. GTFO of the thread.

Shoulda known this thread would bring out the trolls ;) I already have a PS3 fyi. I wasn't asking how I can buy anything new, all I wanted to know is if I can fix it. As I said at the beginning, I have a new arcade, so I wanted to fix this to give to my little brother. Thanks for all that helped.

Only trying to help. I cannot believe people continue to invest in trash after it has failed them so many times. Junk it.

Do you have it in an enclosed space? Make sure its getting proper cooling. Point a fan at it and see if it helps. Try it both upright and laid flat.

If you want to be dishonest, I would sell it on craigslist for $100 bucks ( I guess it's not *that* dishonest) and just explain in the ad it's giving you some trouble. Depending on your area, you probably can find someone who's willing to take it off your hands because the launch systems had um...more primitive DVD-ROM drives that were easier to flash. (Not that I'd know anything about that.)

Put that $100 toward a new system that you know will work for another 3 years.

Man, what's happening to the build quality of consoles. Did N64s and SNESes just stop working after 3 years? I wonder if only Nintendo's hardware is future-proof. Anyone still got a working Gamecube?

The Wii is not as iron-clad as you'd believe. It has issues, too.
