How can a kid flunk English when he speaks it?

Sometimes I think they waste too much time teaching weird stuff to kids in school. I have brief recollections of participles, gerunds, etc. - and I write reasonably well, but have no clue what they mean.
Why don't they teach kids phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and writing - is that not what is important?

Are you sure it's a good idea to start analyzing the flaws of the education system in order to excuse your kid's "F"ailures?

Why not question it?
He articulates well, has a great vocabulary - blows away their 'Standardized Test Scores" in reading and spelling, etc. . . - so if he does all of that how does he get an F (yes he does his homework nightly). . .
Keep in mind there was straight A's in Math and Science (which both require reading and writing as well). . .

2 A's (Math Science)
2 F's (English, Social Studies)
Err... english teacher sucks??How can a kid flunk English when he speaks it?
lolHis reply was - "but they were high F's"
I think it's ok to be proud. It's a dilemma only if it happens again. But then again I want to be proud of him for the A's - what a dilemna. . .

Call. The. Teacher. There's somthing up and you need to get your head out of your butt and find out what it is. And don't go blaming the damn teacher until it's clear that it's their fault.
Jesus, why do I have to say these things? I work for a school and I'm pretty sure it's across-the-board policy for elementary schools to establish open lines of communication with parents.

Don't worry too much about it. I wasn't too interested in school when I was in 5th grade either. If he's at all like me, they'll stay lowish through middle school and then shoot up in high school (I was a C/D student in Middle School and left High School with a 3.8 or so GPA)
Looks like he's at least somewhat interested in Math and Science, keep him focused on that. I wasn't making those kinds of grades in 5th grade...

P.S. Yeah, this is why I'm not a psychology major...I tend to ramble...

Lots of hostility?
Sorry - I'm not blaming anyone - just sharing an experince. . .
I'm not mad at anyone - just curious - mainly wanting other parent's reactions. I'll talk to his teacher? Blame her? No!
Blame him? YES!
Sheesh calm down - I was just having an aside about the curriculum today - not the teachers. I'm smart enough to realize there is a state mandated curriculum 😛

IMO math/ science skills are more important to english skills (at an early age of course)

Beat him senseless. It will bring those Math and Science grades down so they're more consistent, and at least you'll have an explanation.
