Well, personally, I think this is BS. I don't even really HAVE to have the day off, but there was no notice at all that ALL PTO REQUESTS would be denied. It takes going to them and asking why it was denied to figure this out.

This seems unethical to me.

BTW, it's tech support for Olympus.

Not a rant, so no 0/10 ratings, thanks ;).

Thoughts?

EDIT, read my next post for more info that is more potentially disturbing.

If there's a valid reason for this (looming deadlines, no one else available, etc) then sure, maybe that's ok....However, I believe in the "what's fair for you is fair for me" policy...if you are forced to be there when you want off, then I say if you're on call and they need you asap, then you aren't required to be there either. PTO shouldn't have blackout dates around holidays unless it's absolutely necessary...

Oh, and I did some quick math concerning their other PTO terms also.

First off, they are allowing one person in the morning shift and one person in the evening shift to use PTO per day.

That's 10 days of PTO per week.

We have about 50 people (more like 60, but I'd rather estimate low). Each gets 2hrs per week. That's 100 hrs, or 12.5 days of PTO that's given out per week.

So they are giving out 12.5 but only allowing 8 to be used (I forgot to mention that they blackout mondays), not to mention other blackouts such as this.

Therefore, they are giving out PTO in an amount that is not possible to use. And also, when you quit, or if you have another opportunity to cash it out, it only goes at 50%.

Can I do anything about this?

I have denied PTO for resourse reasons.

I need certain things to happen and If someone needs a day off the bussiness USUALLY is gonna come first.

There may be a reason

I dunno..................

My wife works in an environment like that......(larger biz).......while I work in a smaller company and I see her way of work life leaning further and further towards mine year after year.

Here's how I see it................

Company working leaner today than ever.

Company suckin' as much as possible out of employees. (Preferring to pay exhorbitant O/T vs. hiring new folks to save on ridiculous costs of having an employee)

Company taking what they give out as "perks" and changing them to......"Well, if you look at the work world around you, you're lucky to even get what you get!"

Change is comin' about...............slowly but surely!!!

P.S. I have a neighbor who has something like 21 years in his company and has racked up over 18 weeks of vacation time that he figures he'll probably never get back 'cuz the company could never afford to give him the time off in any amount to satisfy, nor are they willing to create a policy where it gets paid out.

Score.........

Global economy where worker's becoming less & less important -------- 1

Employee who's lucky anymore to even have a f'n job ------------- 0

You might be able to do something about that, since it is pretty ridiculous. How high can you escalate it? I'd start it as a polite email questioning how they recommend you use those remaining PTO hours.

Be polite and professional, NOT sarcastic, don't ask rhetorical questions, and frame it as if you are simply bringing it to their attention, which you are because it's likely they have not done the math themselves.
