I think the cdrom is fcked, my screen is kinda bent at the edges, i think the hinge might be a bit fcked and i get the idea that the sudden stop did not help the insides. On the plus it boots.

It fell closed nearly flat on to it's screen. I can hear something rattling around on the inside and the panel for the connectors is sticking out a bit now.

It's amazing how fast life turns to sh!t.

EDIT: I guess it's time to take it in for service. Any suggestions as to waht to say or anything?

I would start with "it fell from about 4 feet onto a concrete floor, and i'm not certain the extend of the damage"

the more honest you are with the tech, the better able he/she will be to fix your problem.

one good resource for pulled apple laptop parts is pbfixit.com. they're pretty reasonable, and a good place to know of to make sure wherever you take it to doesnt gouge you on the parts.

EDIT: if you are technically inclined in the slightest, you can get a hold of the right tools and parts and do it yourself for a whole lot cheaper usually. it's pretty tight in there, but it's well designed...and if you take your time, not too difficult to work with

Buy a Thinkpad :p

Why would I tell the service guy to buy a thinkpad? :p

Well my iBook seems to be semi ok...I may have paniced a bit :p Screen is still bent where it hit the floor and I haven't tested the cdrom... but I think i'm just going to assume it's ok for now.

Agreed, as would the older powerbooks. Apple now puts style over robust/durable design.

Laptops are not meant to be dropped. Cars are not meant to be wrecked.

BTW, do thinkpads now magically float?

Yes... yes they do.
Just another ThinkVantage technology ;)

ROFL, just like the "airbag like technology" for the HDD that Apple mysteriously released a few weeks ago :p
IMO, Extended Warranty w/accidental damage coverage is the only way to fly with a lappy that you care about
God Bless IBM  ;)

EDIT Let's see some pics of the damage!

You should have bought a thinkpad. Apples, boooo. I like the "airbags" the thinkpads now have :).

Lol.... that was my point... your HDD still works. Right now there is a T42 sitting 5 feet from me (my best friend's... one that I advised him to buy). I can tell you that my powerbook feels more solid b/c of the aluminum construction :). Either way you should have some kind of insurance for a valuable machine. I would be crazy to drop 2500 on a lappy and not pay the $140 a year for no ductable insurance... esp because i carry it with me every day...

excuse me i'm a bit drunk now... wish i was 21 :)

I think that a thinkpad wouldn't make any difference in this case, so those comments are stupid. Besides, the ibook had the lid down, so the heads would've been parked anyway, hence the hdd is fine (it also has rubber around it to protect it anyway).
htmlmasterdave: you can get a service manual somewhere on the net for your ibook (google ibg4.pdf).

Is insurance cost-effective?

Well, when you had it, it is not. If you don't have it, it will be VERY cost-effective......
I have 3-yr for my laptop, and I droped it once from the bad to wood floor, nothing bad happen to it.....

Obviously not ;)

In regards to insurance, it depends how much your laptop is worth to you :p
I spent $2000 on my Thinkpad T42 (and that was through my school, so I get a helluva deal) and $130 of that $2000 was spent on upgrading the 3-year warranty to include accidental damage coverage. Now look at my buddy in EE, he bought an $800 Averatec. Do you think he's going to spend $200-$300 to get a 3-year warranty for his laptop? Probly not, seeing as how chances are he isn't going to drop it & if it does develop problems later in life, at that point he would probably buy a nice laptop. My point is that it depends on how much you spent on it, how valuable it is to you, and how long you want to keep it ;) Personally, I'm going to keep my T42 either until it dies or until I can sell it & buy a better one for little cost to me :D

It definitely depends on what you're using the lappy for and such. I have an expensive notebook which I take with me around campus every day. So for me, it makes sense to have the warranty and accidental coverage. I take care of my stuff, but I like the piece of mind.

Most laptops won't survive a really serious fall, such as from 10 feet, or down a flight of concrete service stairs.

But it is amazing how much some laptops have been able to take, and conversely, how easy it has been to break some laptops.

I've seen the dirt cheap Dell Inspiron 1000 notebook survive some pretty horrific falls, usually off a table and on to a tile floor when someone trips over the power cable. I think the survival rate in that case has to do with the oversized plastic enclosure of that notebook.

I have also seen many IBM Thinkpads basiclly shatter upon impact. The rock solid build of some notebooks means that the impacts aren't absorbed, but rather sent throught the notebook as sort of a shockwave.
