Back in the day (<2 years) I bought an IBM 75GXP when they were still popular and now its fvcked up. I can't get the damn thing to boot. It just tries to read and makes scratchy noises. WTF??? This really bites, everything I worked on was on that drive. What should I do? RMA the drive? How do I do that? How do I prove that I bought it 2 years ago? This really sucks because I was going to take off for vacation tomorrow too. :|

Doesn't prove he bought it 2 years ago - lots of stuff sits on the shelf for a while - he could have bought it for a bargin from some site just 2 months ago for all IBM knows

You might want to contact IBM - with the 75GXPs just dying left and right they'll probably send you a RMA regardless of when you bought it

Just go to their site and look up for warranty. Enter the p/n and s/n of the drive and they will tell you if they want that POS back. 😀

<< well, they'll probably accept it just so they can extract and study your pron😉 >>

Well, that's just it... how do I get my files off first? :|

I'm trying to reinstall a new Windows XP copy and the disk just sits there and scratches so I can't get any of my important documents off of it.

Here's the page to see if your drive is covered: link

I have a 75GXP too and it was running fine untill about 2 months ago when I was formatting I heard some loud noise.

edit: dammit zayened beat me to the link

btw, IBM doesn't do data recovery so good luck in getting your info back

um u can't. unless you burn and crush your hd first🙂 well i guess you could
build up a huge magnet mess with your hd that way🙂 the only way to extract or alter data is through expensive data recovery techniques... cleanrooms and lots of fun equip🙂

costs atleast several k for a company to crack your hd open to try to recover data. thats why if you have important sh*t you better run raid(two hd's mirroring each other in hardware)
