So, my grandparents water bill for last month, was...

Somehow my grandma and grandpa used 25k gallons of water in the period of a month... something they couldnt even do if both of them showered seperately every day for 1 hour a piece...

Now, had they filled their pool (5' average depth, 15x30 and 15x15) i could believe it, but seeing as how the pool was still frozen... uh yea, not happening... They even came out and checked it and said the reading was right... wtf.

im 99% sure that the only pipe lines that would have burst are inside/around the house... The pool is outdoors, and has no actual pipe leading to it from the main line, typically it is filled over the course of a few days with a garden hose...

and those water lines around the house would have caused some major issues with their basement, or yard. the house is atleast 60 yrs old.... there are drainage "ditches" in the basement for water that seeps through the concrete blocks, etc... oil heat heh...

yeah. I was thinking it would be hard to not notice the aftermath of 25k gallons of water from broken pipes...but just figured if it's cold enough, maybe something, somewhere, burst. Maybe a slow leak, over time?

Check for leaks on pipes outside & inside house.

Shut off all water valves in house and check water meter indicator out at curb. There is a leak if indicator dial spins.

Call a plumber if there is a leak.

My father knows enough plumbers... heh... and actually now that i think about it, My dad did mention us having to replace a toilet at their house, i betcha that's what caused it...

Have them check for leaks, and schedule a meter check. I used to work for a water company, you wouldn't believe how often this happens. If there's a leak, they have to pay...if it's the meter, the water company has to pay them back, and for any back months that the meter was f'd up

No Need to replace the toilet. If the toilet is the suspect then it could be that you need to adjust the float, adjust the flow rate, and reseat the flapper. New ball cock assembly with flapper & float is about $20.

I had an issue the last two months were the bill was for 13,000 gallons twice. The meter itself was leaking, but it wasn't noticeable until they cleared out the area around it. The storm drain was very close and was able to take away the 18 gallons per hour. After the county replaced the meter, I called them to adjust my bill, but they wouldn't do anything.

the grass around my meter started shooting up way faster than the rest of my yard and my water bill tripled in one month. when i called the city, they said i likely had a broken pipe on my side of the meter and needed to get it fixed. they had just replaced their flowmeter 3 weeks before this and had cracked the pipe leading to my house. i told them that was the only excavation in my yard in 30 years, so they agreed to dig it up and see what happened, saying i would have to pay for the whole thing if it was my problem. they repaired the pipe, it was obvious that they twisted it when they replaced their meter. they also apologized for it taking two months to get to it, and refused to pay the overages on all 3 months bills that were jacked up due to their fuck up.

First thing to do is send a certified letter to the Mayor and other members of the local board. Don;t be mean juts point out that due to failure of the water company your bill is to high. That is if this is a public water company not private. If private then small claims court.
Also call the local media. If its a slow news week they eat stories up like this. news6 on your side helps local man with overage on water bill...

But please don;t let them get away with it.

i did that. the water, power and gas are all city owned in mesa, and even with letters to the mayors office they stated it as standard policy. they considered covering the cost of the excavation and repair of the pipe as satisfactory in that case, despite the problem being caused by their employees. i could have pressed it with the local news hound dogs but i really didnt want to be on tv.
