Fuckers took a PS3, xbox360, bunch of games, movies, laptop & lcd tv :|

The thing about it is, the one window on the side of my apartment didn't lock correctly and could be broken into from the outside, the landlord came over and bolted it shut last night. Are we entitled to some sort of compensation because of that? I would think so...?

Apparently there has been a string of break ins on first floor apartments around my area, I called the police and the fuckin jerkoff cop comes over takes 2 minutes of notes and says "Yea, we'll 100% never find your stuff". Told him to get out. They have surveillence video of these guys from another apartment and still can't catch 'em...pretty terrible detective work. What do they pay these assholes for? I want to see the tape. I want to find the culprits and I really wanna fuckin torture them.

do you have renters insurance?

Just moved in, was looking into purchasing it sometime this week. Landlord doesn't allow pets. The thing about it is, the one window on the side of my apartment didn't lock correctly and could be broken into from the outside, the landlord came over and bolted it shut last night. Does he have to face some sort of liability because of that?

Sorry to hear about your stuff... sounds expensive. 🙁

Check with MS and Sony and see if they can get an IP address if your 360 or PS3 sign onto the Internet. Even if they don't use your username, I know Microsoft uses a unique console identifier that is sent to them when you sign onto XBL. They can look it up with your gamertag and they should be able to tell you if the console is used online again. Whether they're willing... it can't hurt to ask.

You're definitely going to want to get renter's insurance. I don't know if your landlord is at fault (I'm not going to claim to know), but I do know that if you hadn't told him about the window before this incident, you should have.

The apartment we're getting into right now has the original locks on it from like 1880 - something that would cause problems when we go to get renter's insurance as far as liability is concerned. So we're going to ask the landlord (AHEAD OF TIME) to change the locks or else we'll do it ourselves.

I'm sorry all your stuff was taken though.

Drilled it shut? WTF is that? Do you mean he screwed\bolted the window shut? Or randomly poked a hole in it and somehow making it shut?

If window didn't lock correctly, then wouldn't you think it's entirely possible that it was the former tenants who knew it didn't work correctly?

Anyway, sucks, but you're probably up shit creek without a paddle. You can try blaming the landlord but he/she will probably just laugh at you.

This is the reason you get an apartment that is secure.

He's not responsible, and you're irresponsible to not have renter's insurance. It costs less than a buck a day for me, and I pay more than anyone else I know (since san francisco has so much f'n crime compared to anywhere else that I have ever lived...)

It's $.50/day. Sure you pay $200/yr, but then when you have THOUSANDS of dollars of stuff like this stolen you can actually get some compensation for it.

I UNDERSTAND as I've stated already, we had just moved in and my roomate and I were looking in to it two nights ago and were gonna take care of it this weekend.

Unfortunately you are SOL. The only recourse you could possibly have is if you had a long history of negligence on their part for not repairing the window lock (ie multiple ignored service requests). If that was the case you would have to sue him and spend more time\energy\money in litigation than the cost of what was stolen.

Renters insurance is the answer. Our complex wouldn't let us renew our lease without proof of having it.

If your still pissed you might be able to get the land lord in hot water because that window might be a fire egress and its now perma-locked.

Check your lease agreement. Odds are there's a bit in there about the landlord not being held responsible for this sort of thing.

Yeah, I understand that you're pissed, but come on. What do you want them to do, start knocking down doors and checking serial numbers on Xboxes? Would you prefer he lie about your odds?

Here's the scoop; one of two things happened to your stuff:
A) someone stole it to use it - the ONLY legit way cops will have to find it is by pulling over the car it happens to be in before they unload... after that, it's in a house... somewhere in your city of X million people.

B) someone stole it to sell it - At best, it's all in a pawn shop - and if the "don't talk to the cops" assholes around here are any indication, there's no pawn shop owner that will both buy the stuff and call the cops, only to have it seized (nevermind the impact it'd have on business in the first place). At worst, it's sold and in someone's house already... see a).

I see your thing about the window, but I rather doubt the landlord's on the hook for it (though I could be wrong - worth checking out).

As for seeing the tape? What're you going to do, Sherlock? You going to mount your own posse and round 'em up?

Edit: Sorry you got ripped off - I've been there and know how it feels.

Insurance would be much cheaper. Having a large dog is an extra $75-$100 JUST in extra rent, then you have food\vet\etc costs. Then there is also breed restrictions and Im sure all the "scary" ones are on that list.

That may be just my complex, but Im pretty sure is standard practice.

Then you just leaned a vaulable and semi expensive life lesson.

Chalk this one up as a lesson and never rent again without having renter's insurance before move-in. In fact, the last apartment I lived in required proof of insurance before we got the keys! The extra $100/year is worth it.
