So my engine light came on and the problem was ...

With the gas cap. Supposedly I screwed it on wrong after I filled up my gas?
Does that make any sense. The technician told me on newer model cars, this tends to happen.
My question is I pumped gas two nights ago and it just came on this morning? Only one way to screw that
sucker on, right?!

Also, does anyone have a 97 Camry XLE v6? How many miles do you approx get on one full tank? I get about
230 miles before the ticker gets real close to "E." I put gas in it every other day. Maybe it's because I drive 60+ miles a day?
My dad drove it a couple of times, and he has a closer commute and he says the same thing about the car. I hate to take
it in for a tune-up if all it is is the car just being a gas guzzler.

The check engine lights will come on in both mine and my wife's car if the gas cap isn't on tight. It doesn't necessarily come on immediately, either.

When I screw my gas cap on, I screw it until it starts clicking, then I try to play a song with all the clicking noises :)

If the gas cap is not secure, it may cause a lack of pressure in the fuel system (as I understand it). Also I have a 1989 Camry (i4) , 12 gallon tank gets me 325 miles on the highway.

Check how many mpg you get. Fill it up, reset the trip counter, then the next time you fill up, divide the miles on the counter by the gallons you put in.

It has to due with emmissions. Keeping your gas cap tight prevents fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere. If the system detects a loss of pressure for an extended period of time it will set a code and bring on the light. Usually the code reads (with the proper scanning equipment): Large Evap System Leak.

That's why in a lot of states with emmissions testing they will actually test your gas cap to make sure it's sealing correctly. They have a machine that they screw the gas cap onto that actually does this.

In my experience Nissans are the most prone to setting the check engine light if it's run without the cap secured. There are other makes as well that do this.

This happened to my wife in our '98 Grand Prix. She looked in the owners manual and found the gas cap as fix, tried it (with no real faith) and it worked. Guess I owe her $40.

Havent you heard the OnStar radio spot where the dweeb calls OnStar and complains that the service engine light is on?

They tell the dweeb to stop and screw himself as well as the gas cap tightly.

OK, I made up the part about screwing himself, but you can easily infer that from the tone of voice of the OnStar guy.
