they didn't believe in modern technology like radios or TV.. having a radio was enough to get you excommunicated. They spent most of their spare time praying and reading the Bible and doing crazy stuff at their church. He was eventually excommunicated because he stated that he believed in Darwin's theory of evolution. The entire community just cut him off. So he migrated to Australia. The rest is history.

length of time in existence has nothing to do with the definition of a cult

for instance, Jehova's Witness has been around for quite a while :D

My wife's parents were hard core hippie cult members. She was actually raised in a commune til she was 5 and her parents dropped out... They're pretty cool people, her mom rocks, and her dad's alright too.

The cult was The Church Universal Triumphant

Personally the fact that you won't reproduce is evidence enough of a higher power, and obviously an intelligent one.

JW and The Brethern are not cults

but there is no point in arguing here in OT, since 80% of the people are athiests and think all religions are cults and 15% of the people in OT are the type of Christians that think every Christian but themselves are cultists. so that only leaves 5% of the OT'ers that have an open mind to discussing religious stuff. its a waste of time here

My brothers and sisters share 50% of my DNA. They reproduce, a good chunk of my genetic material gets passed on.

But who says I won't be reproducing?

Technology can increase communication, and uncontrolled communication gets in the way of brainwashing.

It was just wishful thinking on our part.

I think the JW do qualify as a cult.

LOL this is the funniest cult posting I have ever read.

What a load of losers. But then they would never know how much they suck since they don't get onto the internet right? :p

--

Brief History: When Mark Prophet was 17 years old, he was supernaturally contacted by El Morya, who is called an "Ascended Master." 6 Ascended Masters are people who, through reincarnation, have perfected themselves by passing the tests and trials of life on earth. Through this pursuit of perfection, the masters have balanced their karmas and ascended to God, ending their cycle of rebirth. 7

Altho there was no internet when my Dad was a kid. But I've read the exclusive Brethren still exist today, and they are just as kookie as they were back then. Amazingly, they have a web site, despite the fact that their religion forbids use of the internet. They are also very secretive, no contact details are given on the website.

The ONLY difference between a religion and a cult would be the number of followers.

Pretty close to what most theologians say.

Josh McDowell wrote a big book on World Religioins and Cults and he said kind of the same thing. I need to go back and read that hing again to make sure though.
