He just called me up about it and to find out if it's much of a hassle to get a new license and Soc Sec card number. I assume he will be getting a new license with a new number correct? and a totally new Soc Sec number (if they re issues one) ?

IDK, all I ever carry is my drivers license and debit/credit card.

I just searched about the Soc Sec, says there has to be evidence that your number is being mis used for them to give you a new number. That sort of answer one of the ?s but have any of you ever known someone that had to go through this ordeal?

I highly recommend he get a credit monitoring service until he gets this ordeal sorted out.

Edit: He should call each credit agency and lock down his credit while he is at it.

Your cus should've bought life shield or whatever the hell that thing's call. It guards the average joes who carry their birth certificate, SS card, car title, and passport on their person at all times.

Easier way: Stay the fuck out of Mexico, especially right now.

This.

Is there a way to notify the IRS that his SSN got jacked? Surely his card is worth quite a bit in Mexico.

Easiest way: Screw up your credit enough that if someone steals your identity they are doing you a favor!

Why the hell would you carry around your SS card in your wallet? Memorize the number... if you haven't already. The rest of the time it should be kept in a safety deposit box or other safe place.

You know, I think in the next decade we'll see a change in the way credit and SS# systems work. So many people (some like the OP's cousin aren't helping things and being pretty silly about their information) are being victimized.

http://www.ssa.gov/

1. Look for dropbox that says "Questions" above it. It should say "Social Security Number and Card"
2. Press "Go"
3. Click the 7th link "How do I report a stolen or lost Social Security card?"
4. Read answer
5. ?????
6. Profit

Your cousin's husband is about to be employed as a seasonal laborer in 10 states.

That's exactly what I said.

"Why the FAK were you carrying the SS card with you" << retard move

lol at jpeytons comment. I think hes already called the credit branches and at least canceled or did something about his credit card and some other BS. I'll let him know about the SSA website as soon as he's home.

Provided he can get home. His ass should be at the embassy right now.

Getting a SS card replaced isn't a big deal. Yet another reason to have a passport as it will make replacement much easier as well as being able to get home.

Why people keep going to Mexico is beyond me. The whole place needs to be fenced in and nuked.

Your cousin needs to check his state regulations regarding a credit freeze.
It may be free or as much as $15.00 / credit bureau, and it will need to be done on each one, but that is the only way to prevent unauthorized use. It's easy to thaw when you need to use it and can re-freeze after.

Bummer about the hold-up though.

Chance are it will only be used for phoney ID's anyway.

Edit: Rule #1 for travel beyond the border : Make photocopies of SSCard and Drivers License. Carry That. Leave a copy w/ friend in U.S.
