So my computer won't start up anymore

i can't understand what the problem could be (besides the fact that i am a n00b). i took out some ram and replaced it with some other ram from another computer. i've done this dozens of times, with no problems, but now the computer won't start up. i took out the hard drive and plugged it into another computer and it booted up fine--i was able to get my files off it and everything. does this situation sound familiar to anyone? the monitor doesn't come on, the power is there, but no start-up.

help is much appreciated.
TIA!

yeah, that was the first thing i tried. i should have mentioned it before. i personally think my brother did something to it, as he's the one who found it in this condition--but he swears all he did was try to turn it on, and, nothing.

i tried it again for good measure, but it still didn't work.

It's possible the bios configuration got hosed when the ram was swapped. Do you know how to clear a cmos (bios) on the motherboard so it goes back to default settings? It should be in your motherboard's manual or pc maker's manual.

Is your brother a magnet by chance?

i don't know but i'll try and find out....hopefully i don't actually need the comp on to clear the cmos.

You DO NOT want the rig powered up when you clear the bios! It is as simple as moving a jumper over one pin and leaving there for 5 min, then moving it back, with the power disconnected.

So now you are saying it did work when you changed them and now it suddenly does not right? Before you made it looked like you just did it and it was your first chance to test it out...

Unless your brother cracked open the case himself, there was little he could do to it. Try clearing the CMOS as mentioned, but there is no guarantee the motherboard hasn't failed since they are the most likely component to fail behind hard drives.

i've switched out the ram in the comp before with no problems. this time when i switched out the ram i can't get it to start up again. since the cmos thing didn't work, maybe the motherboard is kaput....the case was open when i saw it, and i kept asking my brother what he did to it. he insists he did nothing but try to turn it on. sorry for the confusion!
