So my 77 year old grandmother wants to join Facebook

While I find the idea stupid, is there any harm? Keep in mind I know little to nothing about MySpace, Facebook, etc. Are there any possible risks for the unsavvy (fraud, etc.)?

My 76 year old mother is on the web, has her own website and participates in numerous forums and chats.

It's a great social connection tool for seniors.

It's a great social connection tool for many people.

I don't understand many of the stigmas placed on social networking sites by the "technologically savvy" at ATOT.

Hahaha, my great grandmother (86) was afraid of Finding Nemo.. 😛 "Wow, they can make fish talk now. And live in those boxes.." Technology scares her, but I love her 🙂.

I appreciate the positive words. The orgy comments, well, I did chuckle abit after working to remove the visuals from my head. I think I will give her the green light once I make it clear that I will not provide tech support.

Don't you have to be part of a college/uni

I was under the impression that they were opening it up to everyone.

But get this, her retirement complex is deeply connected with an adjoining college. She takes classes and such. Here e-mail address is a .EDU.

Because some colleges and high schools don't have school email addresses, they've opened facebook up to everyone.

lol, why? is she tech savvy??

Why? God only knows. A cousin of hers (a college professor) e-mailed her the following:

I wanted to let you know that now everyone can join Facebook, even if you couldn't before. You can use Facebook to see the profiles of the people around you, share photos, and connect with friends.

So she then passed the question along my way. She is relatively tech savvy. She's an avid e-mailer and web surfer. Nice new PC for whatever it's worth...

I'm sure that's the reason. 😛
