Hi all. Got a few questions. I have an xbox 360 that I bought just under 2 years ago. It is an arcade version with the HDMI out connection. It finally RROD on me and I want to send it back to MS. My questions are:

1. Will MS send me back a similar model? Like the HDMI and less problematic CPU?
2. If I decide it aint worth it and buy the cheapest version out now how would I copy my current HD to the new one? Its a completely different for-factor right? I do have the convertor cable from when I replaced my 20gb drive for a 120gb drive. Will that cable work copying the data to a new style 360?

1) I'm not sure.
2) You'd need the hard drive transfer kit, which I believe you have. If I recall, it's a USB adapter with a plug on the other end that connects to the old style HDD and a disc that facilitates the transfer.

Personally, I repaired my 360 myself using the x-clamp mod that Amazon sells and it still works fine.

same boat as you, mine was a launch one from day one, from friends and such its the last one alive of all the people I know who bought one way back. I think short game sessions and good placement so it was never blocked for cooling have prolonged its life. But with a backlog of about 200 games I decided to quite buying them and playing some. HALO ODST wont get past the cut scene at the start with the drop keep saying my disc is dirty (its new!) after i noticed that a couple others are doing the same. I had noticed it seemed like my drive was having issues keeping up with cut scenes.. maybe just a drive fail.. but.. eh... its about the same as RROD .. not a quick fix.

they send back the exact same SKU that you send in..
I had to do it 4 times.

yes you have the correct cable.

when this Elite dies I will be getting the new one.. not even going to bother with repair.

wow I find such commitment to such a shitty game system amazing, specially considering that cases like this are typical among Xbox players

Yeah, I have 4 360s and 3 have died at one point. This one is the only one I have that has the better cpu cooling and HDMI so I would like to get this swapped/fixed. Xbox live kicks ass tho so I love the 360. My PS3 is literally collecting dust as I hate the online experience (which has been down for weeks and I didnt even care). We 360 owners are gluttons for punishment I guess. :)

Thanks for the info everyone.

don't hesitate to call MS because I think the warranty is only 2 yrs. I'm glad I traded in my 4th original model for the new slim one, which has worked perfectly.

I think its a testament of how much fun the 360 is that people are willing to have the system fixed or even buy a replacement system.

I have both 360 and PS3 launch systems, and the 360 RROD'd. I went out and bought a new 360 and recently I just bought another 360 for the upstairs media room. All of this while my PS3 collects dust.

Worst part about owning more than one 360 is realizing you need to put your profile on a memory stick and literally switch it from 360 to 360 :\. I actually had no idea it was like that until I bought a second one and wondered why I couldn't add my account.

Yeah for all the things they really got right on the software/network side with the 360, they definitely blew it on this one. I've got 2 360s and a PS3. At this point I think I'm going to sell the extra 360 and just get another PS3. Hell I want another BR player anyway.

Not a fan boy, actually prefer my PS controler (been playing PS games since the psone and just like it) And the PS3 only games are (just opinion) much better then the 360 only games. But the 360 has the better online service right now... but I must admit the 7 year old who learned a new cuss word mentality of it really destroys the fact that its pretty nice. I figured a few years (5-6 now?) the "kiddy" swearing and raning would wear off.. but man its as strong as ever.. games where some sound clues help are just chat channels.. of course.. the no chat of a PS3 game is also not good.

Honestly might have just got a 360 only if wasnt for the xbox 360 fan base (online) its really just plain sad.

Yeah, the PS3 actually works fine in this regard. I have the same PSN account on both PS3s and I've never had a problem using it on either of them. Although, I don't know what happens if you try to log on the same account on two PS3s at the same time. I'm assuming that's what MS tried to avoid, but they did it in such a terrible (and arguably lazy) manner.

Why don't you just trade it in the next time they have a special on it and upgrade? At least you would get something for your system and save some on the upgrade you plan on doing anyways.
