So my 200gb hd almost died... trying to revive it right now.

Not sure how it exactly happend, but i've been moving things around my PC today, and it must have corrupted files on my Seagate 200gb hd.

I can see most of the files in Windows, but alot of files won't open because they're corrupted. Some folders won't even open either. When going through to see what works, I came across a South Park episode that had pr0n randomly cut into it! :Q. I shoulda taken a video of it with my cellphone haha. Other vid files will freeze after the first screen, or only play part of the video.

Right now i'm running a check disk. Windows is trying to replace bad clusters, and recovering orphan files or something. I've been running this for the past hour and its only at 7%. Is it suppose to take this long?

My guess is if your hard drive has a lot of damage then yes, it could take quite awhile for Check Disk to complete.

Another option would be to buy SpinRite (although it's not cheap at $89).

bumping your hd is damaging to your data and the heads as well
I've had it happened as well, my hd was messed up beyond repair.
try to be more gentle next time, its very fragile like a glass of water.
a little crack and it's a goner.

i ran the check disk, some of the folders and files were recovered. however, alot of my video files are still corrupted (they won't play, or theyll play partially). any ideas on how i can try to recover?

And in the end if i can't recover, will a format fix it, or is my hd perm damaged? Btw does Seagate warranty cover something like this? I just moved my PC back from college, so it's possible that the HD couldve gotten damaged on the car ride too.

I just bought a new 300gb hd, and was planning on using a spare 160gb i had for backups, but it's too late :( Luckily my music was on a diff hd, and i have my music backed up onto DVDRs, so those are ok.

Anyways, instead of turning this thread into a, "you should always backup thread"... does anyone have any last ditch suggestions for recovery?

I purchased a Maxtor 200GB drive back when they cost well over $250. (July 2003) Fourteen months later, upon a typical reboot, I get a message stating file system not found. Everything that I didn't have backed up was of course lost forever. Six weeks at a professional data recovery service ended in disappointment as they could not recover anything. The drive wouldn't even format. Realizing that most HD's at the time had a two or three year warranty, I figured that although I lost data, at least I didn't lose out my $250 for the drive, or so I thought. I contacted MAXTOR only to discover that this particular HD only had a one year warranty. The MAXTOR rep stated that prior to my purchase of this HD, most of their drives had a 3 yr warranty, as did most of the other manufacturers at that time. MAXTOR for some reason over a 1.5 year period reduced all of their warranties to one year. Now, they are back to 3 years. My HD just happened to fall into this window. I asked MAXTOR what the deal was with warranty and they gave me some garbage about current market conditions dictated the change. No matter what I suggested, they simply refused to work with me at all. Their attitude was a complete uncaring TOO BAD FOR YOU ? YOU?RE SCREWED HA HA! I told MAXTOR that they have certainly refined the HD self destruct sequence and the company rep stated that he could not confirm or deny that it was a possibility.
All I know, it I will never purchase another MAXTOR product ever again! Buy a Seagate, they have a five year warranty! At least they stand behind their product!

It can take quite some time if the drive is damaged. You may be looking at an overnight wait.
