So much for GM's re-birth! Edmunds PWNS the Solstice!

They knocked a primitive convertible for being a... primitive convertible? 😕

Edmunds really likes destroying its own reputation in its reviews, I have found.

Well - I think they have some valid points, especially with the fit and finish. If the Mazda MX-5 can excel in everything the Solstice falls short at, which it does, then is that not a shortfall?

Edmunds reviews is like cnet.

More like - they cover the bases for the average buyer, and I think the concerns brought up are certainly something the average Solstice buyer will endure.

The Solstice had a very rushed push to market - production began something like 3 (maybe 4) years after initial paper design. It was Lutz's personal project, and in a lot of ways I think it could still be deemed a success. They need to commit to it and not let it die just because it's hot now and won't be as hot in 2 years. Maybe come up with an improved model for 2008 that addresses some of the shortcomings.

Didn't they change the gearing in the trans this year? So a sports car rides rough and has a small trunk? I own a miata btw but between the two I take a GXP solstice anyday.

While I agree with their assessment of the Solstice is a beauty that is hard to live with on daily basis, I don't think it has much to do with GM's re-birth.
GM's rebirth is mainly due to brilliantly executed large truck and SUV redesign, and the new Lambda crossover designs. Plus all the other product redesigns.
Solstice is only there to create an image for Pontiac, and it has the looks to do it.

Yeah I bet the new GXPs are a lot better than this first off product. THe first iteration of any car is always a little shittier than normal.

"A quick look at the test numbers from the track show impressive statistics ? a 7.2-second 0-60-mph time, a 15.6-second quarter-mile at 88 mph and a 66.2-mph spin through the slalom. All are comparable to or better than the Miata."

I wouldn't call those stats impressive, actually slower than I had thought it would have been. I'd race one now, and certainly in January after I get my Supercharger 😛

Everything they list is all very minor and easily corrected (except for the stupidly small trunk space). I expect that GM is listening and is working to polish the car. It was rushed into production.

Edmunds reviewers can't drive for sh1t. That being said, it's still not a fast car by any means.

The more I read Edmunds, the less respect I have for them. Calling the harsh ride quality an issue is almost like saying it's good handling is a flaw. I can side with some of the complaints on the finish and what not, but still you can't expect the same ride and conveniences as a normal commuter car.

i totally agree. i'm pissed at my 06 civic for weird rattles behind the dash(?) and a few other smaller fit & finish things. the goddamn rattle is really annoying.

I stopped trusting Edmund's reviews about a year ago...
They have simply been going downhill everyday.

Note that I am not supporting the solstice here - the car is 'meh' at best.

Unfortunately, that's all it has.

Edit-And there is no way in hell I'd ever buy a first year model American car. Yet, I've purchased two first year model Japanese cars in the past 6 years.

edmunds only talks highly of cars over the 40k mark........

for the price of the solstice its a good deal.

everything they cry about would boost the car price over 35k.

So they're complaining over a first year car that was built on a budget and rushed to production. :cookie:

For all the naysayers saying Edmunds dug their own grave - when compared to a similarly priced, in the same segment Miata, they don't have nearly the same complaints. The car can be better. Period. They're just pointing that out.

I LOL when I see these thread titles cos I have no clue who or what Edmunds is, and the same goes for the Solstice. They could be wrestlers for all I know 🙂 Then I wander in and it's all about a car.

(okay, GM gave it away a little bit but I'm used to Vauxhall)
