Eh, cool for those who only have PCs but its unfortunately too far after release for me to bother. I've played it on the 360 and PS Vita at this point, but would loved to have played it on the PC when it was new. Would really hope for Injustice to get ported over quicker so I can play on the PC, but I don't see it happening.

Are you kidding me? It would stop me from BUYING it. I am not buying a piece of garbage with securom's lifetime 5 install limit, and i'm never dealing with the hassle of GFWL again. Ever.

so you're ok with lets say Steams DRM, but other DRM is not ok?

either way, doesn't affect me. Cry about it some more, maybe i can fill up a cup 🙂

Oh, so you're trolling me now? Excellent. Yes i'm okay with steam's DRM. Steam's DRM doesn't impose a 5 install limit and then say "screw you" if you happen to exceed it. Steam's DRM doesn't hassle me like GFWL. GFWL has at numerous times crashed my systems, mysteriously rebooted for an updated without prompting, deleted my save games, among other things. Too many issues to list. Steam DRM has NEVER done these things. It never hassles me. Never deletes save games. Etc.

There is a stark contrast between Steam's DRM and other things such as SecuROM and GFWL .

not trolling at all my dude , not everyone who has a different opinion from yours is trolling...
If these are the things that fuel your purchase decisions, then that's your prerogative.

i can only speak for myself and only myself. I've never had a problem with any sort of DRM.

So...what's your point? it was pretty clear from his first post that he prefers some forms of DRM over others, is that such a surprise for you?

It's nice that you haven't had a problem with DRM so far, most of us haven't been so lucky.

hence my remark, that i was only speaking for myself 🙂
no real point, just felt like saying. and his original post was a question asking if it had securom or GFWL. it wasnt until i said something that he made is opinion known 🙂

you say most...you cant make the assumption . most means that more than half. and its not possible to determine that.

and i came to the post looking for a discussion about the game.

if you would like i can give my opinion

How can you possibly be okay with a type of DRM (secuROM) that imposes a hard limit on the number of installs you do? If you have to do a system recovery, that counts towards the 5 install limit. Last I heard, GPU driver install can as well. There are numerous times where i've had to either re-install an OS or use system recovery and those will always count towards SecuROMs limits. I am not okay with this. Not at all.

Now, GFWL is certainly more debatable, but I think you'll find the vast majority of users do not like it - you can google it for anecdotal evidence or browse this very forum. I do feel like steamworks is about as hassle and pain free as can possibly be, which is why I have never - not once - ever complained about steamworks. I only complain about DRM when it bothers me. When it hassles me. When it starts mysteriously rebooting my computer. Causes crashes. Deletes savegames. Etc. GFWL has caused these issues for me, and left a sour taste. I am not one of those folks that are on a crusade against DRM just because it's DRM - DRM alone does not bother me - hassle bothers me.

Anyway, if you haven't been affected your opinion may differ about GFWL. But, I am glad that warner is no longer using it - it has been my biggest issue with their Batman games. Fantastic games, but I did not like GFWL. So in any case, it appears that Warner is going steamworks for future releases - so I am happy about that. Also happy that MK isn't using GFWL. 😉

i didnt say i liked it, like i said before, i havent been affected by it yet. most single player games that arent open world such as assassins creed i dont play through a 2nd time. so i install finish and uninstall. and most games i just install and let it sit on my pc.
I do find Steam to be the best form of DRM for me. Origin works pretty good as well.

I played fable 3 the other day and GFWL didnt interfere with my game. I would be pissed too if my saved games disappeared. especially if it were an open world game like Fable.
if this was maybe 5 years ago, i might have cared. but i just want the games to run without alot of configuring. the DRM is more of an afterthought.

As far as MK goes, i havent encountered any sort of annoying DRM.
the game has its problems, but DRM isnt one 🙂

It's not using GFWL nor SecuROM, and I'm having a blast.

I really liked the Story Mode, very pleased that Mortal Kombat's "lore" was detailed that way, it's very cheesy at times though, but that's ok since MK never really was grim or very serious to start with (only violent, exaggeratedly so). There's a few scenes that I thought were daring (violent) enough and rather surprising story-wise. Now that I think of it I really never realized back when I my cousin rented it on the 360 for a day that the Story Mode was in fact a "revisiting" [reboot] of MK1, MK2 and MK3.

** SPOILERS **

There's three "stages" (not named per se in the game I am the one calling it as such) in the story progression which themselves are split in chapters. That's how they're called in the game but if you never really followed the "story" of the MK franchise you really won't distinguish the differences between the stages I'm referring to (and would only consider the "chapters" as playing as different characters and that would be it).

Basically the first "stage" of the story is a re-told MK1, the intro to the tournament with the cast of original characters except that since it's basically a reboot they included a couple of new elements that were of course never considered to start with when the original MK game was released (such as Sonya being on a mission with Jax and basically having nothing to do with the tournament since she's there to find Kano, and Johnny Cage being there for "acting" and having no idea of what's really going on). I really liked how the story moved on until - just like in the actual MK1 game back then - we eventually get to fight Gorro and defeat Shang Tsung (although I can't for the life of me recall the actual order in which we fight them back in MK1, wasn't it Shang Tsun first and then Gorro?).

Then once that "stage" is over you clearly move on to the start of a re-told MK2 which really feels like a sequel and connects very well with the previous "chapters". We even get to fight in specific maps only when (as it should) specific characters or stages of the story telling happen, so for instance we never fight in Shao Kang's arena until we actually have to (you know, rather than having the map just thrown in blindly for the heck of it as it could have been had they not taken their story-telling seriously). And if any of you played MK2 back then you'll certainly remember Kahn's arena with Kano and Sonya Blade being held by chains with Kahn sitting on his throne between them? Well they did that with Kitana this time around (and we get to know why and how she end up there as well) and we ourselves end up in the arena to not only fight Kahn but of course good ol' Kintaro before him just as it was back in MK2 (but honestly I prefer Gorro... Kintaro is just... I don't know, he's "OK" but he seems dumb, in the story I mean, but he's of course very strong).

Now, the thing is back in the days of MK3 I started losing some interest in the franchise (and not having Scorpion in the original release of MK3 at the arcades did not help the case for me) and never really got to understand the "story" of MK3 and, admittedly I was one of the guys who at the time who complained about the combos system and sprinting, and thought it didn't "feel MK anymore". So, long story short I never got to follow the story and never understood how (if in any way) MK2 and MK3 connected together. I'm mentioning this specifically because MK9's story-telling did just that and did it well (in my opinion). The events that follow MK2's re-telling of Kahn's defeat to the "start" of MK3's re-telling stage is exactly the kind of details and story links that I completed missed back in the days (and I don't know if the story of MK3 back then was clear or detailed anyway). Now we get to understand why (even if it's really cheesy) Kahn wasn't "really" killed in "MK2" and how the invasion of Earthrealm was planned and executed as the start of MK3's story-telling (and final "stage").

Anyway, I won't spoil too much but I absolutely loved the overall grim approach they took with that final MK3 stage, you feel the desperation at some point and you (well I did anyway) get to scratch your head and ask yourself "wow ok, not much else can be done at this point, so do the bad guys win or...". Again, some scenes were cheesy and just literally numb and devoid of necessity (except for "story progression purposes and the heck of it to make sure that you get to fight this and that character at least once) but that's just picking on a few of them. I mean, generally speaking as much as I like to pinch on those specific scenes for being completely "out of the blue" I really am impressed by how well "story telling" for a Mortal Kombat game ended up to be. It's probably one of the only fighting game franchise out there with an actual detailed-enough lore behind it and its characters at this point (and no I wouldn't compare the MK franchise to something like fighting games occurring within the Marvel or DC universe since those had tons of comics for decades prior to said fighting games adaptations to build up their own lore).

Anyway so I really liked the Story Mode (think I made this clear by now) and I'm getting trashed like there's no tomorrow on-line. Well I did get to win a match (both rounds!) against some random guy who probably keeps playing ranked matches since he had something like 100+ wins with only 30 or so losses, but that victory was short-lived (and I might have been lucky anyway although I did fight properly and didn't just mash buttons blindly) since the following four other matches were decisive victories for him with four different characters and he executed their finishing moves as well so yeah, I got trashed, but man I had a blast (and when he played as Skarlet I felt completely helpless, that girl is crazy in all senses of the word and whomever masters her moves will make their opponents cry for their mother).

All of this is rather new for me anyway since I never got past the middle point of MK1's stage in the Story Mode when I played the game with my cousin on his 360, not to mention that we mostly just played in training mode and just did some regular Ladder matches. Now that I got the game for me at home I finally get to enjoy a gem of fighting games that I missed for all those years since its release on consoles. It's the most fun I'm getting out of a fighting game since Killer Instinct at the arcades. So far I'd say that my favorite characters are Scorpion (duh!), Jade (ended up memorizing most of her moves already and I liked her in the Story Mode too, and I still remember her peeking out of the Living Forest trees back in MK2), Smoke (I'm surprised they haven't included Cyborg Smoke though, man that one was awesome in UMK3) and to my own surprise Jax (never really tried to learn his moves in previous MK games but in this one... wow, he hits like a truck).

Perhaps I'll consider revealing my Steam identity for on-line games when I get more confident that I can get trashed by AT members 😛

the online lag is horrendous.. i played like 4 matches and the delay was like 3-5 seconds.

While the story mode was cool and kind of forces the player to use almost all the characters. At least to familiarize with each. i found myself liking guys i normally never played with in the previous MK's. like cabal, i never cared much for him. i disliked him very much in UMK3

If you play the arcade mode, you can see each fighters ending. This is nothing new, all the MK's had this. I only saw 3 of them. plan on playing more this weekend. its only 10 fights for medium, takes like 30 minutes or so. depending on how quickly you can put away goro and shao kahn. once you learn there pattern its easy to beat them.

the challenge towers have been around for the last few games. I like those. wish they gave more gold. the story mode gives so much gold. debating playing through that again just to get the gold.

Well I'd expect the on-line latency to be very unpredictable, and as far as I can see there's no clear indication of your opponent's own latency versus your own (other than that color-coded sphere in created/joined Lobbies I think, but that one isn't present in regular non-Lobby 1 Vs 1 matches that I've tried). In my case there was no lag for the five matches I've played against that one guy, but I know that I'll certainly get lag at some point, but I don't mind that much about it since for me on-line play is not even secondary, it's just an extra when I care to give it a go (I'm much more of an off-line against A.I. type of guy when it comes to fighting games).

As for the gold coins indeed the Story Mode gave a crap load of them and with those only (from that mode) I was able to get all unlocks from the Deadlands and some from the adjacent map to the right (can't recall its name). I didn't think about playing the Story Mode again just for the coins, maybe I'll consider doing that. I do recall a challenge from the Challenge Tower in which all you do is hit your opponent (which I think was Kano, and you playing as Kabal) to gain coins, and the more hits you land the more coins you receive until you die. I mention that one since I remember trying it another time and it worked, so I don't know how many times that one challenge can be repeated but that's a very cheap and fast way to gain some coins (I think I got maybe 1K out of the two tries or perhaps it was a bit more).

As for the regular Ladder matches (where we get to see all character's own endings as it always has been since MK1) I've completed one on Hard difficulty with Scorpion (and was pleased with his ending too) and will start another one with Jade next since I'm starting to memorize most of her moves (and again will try to start on Hard then lower the difficulty if I have too much trouble). There's also the tag team ladder mode which will be hectic but I'm reserving that for another time (there's more moves to memorize such as tag "assists" in tag team matches, so I'll have to practice that first for a few days). So yeah great game, very happy with the purchase, not a single issue so far (for me anyway) and finally got to use my otherwise dormant pad which I had originally bought for SFIV (which I haven't played in months). I'm considering buying an actual XBOX 360 controller though, since the MadCatz fightpad isn't exactly best I think but I manage (it's better to use for SFIV, it really wasn't just a gimmick on the controller to help with the sells, it does play better with that buttons layout for SFIV than it does for MK9, at least in my opinion).

I use a wireless 360 controller, works well. I use the D-pad, but its kind of clunky. I never really liked using the Analog sticks. I thought the controller felt smoother for SFIV. None the less, works nice. Both games are configured out of the box to support it, which is very cool. I wish more porting companies would do this. using xpadder or any key binding program becomes cumbersome.

IMO the Xbox dpad makes it very hard to play fighters. If the analog stick works well for this game then disregard. I haven't actually played this title, but generally the dpad on a 360 controller is considered less than ideal.

at the moment i cant justify the cost. and does the pc have one? or Do you use an Xbox/PS3 fight stick? since they probably use USB

I have a modded madcatz fight stick that works on ps3/360/PC via usb

Edit: the ps3 fight sticks work native. There are multi system arcade sticks available from eightarc.com but yeah not really cheap.

I am hoping there is a multi console version for the ps4 and xb1 I can get in the future.
