So many people say Norton sucks

Ok, so I used Systemworks 2003 for a long time and then switched to 2005. 2005 really slowed my laptop down (Pentium M 1.86, 512mb), but that's ok.

My desktop handles 2005 with no problem (Opteron 170, 2gb) but then 2006 came out. I gave it a spin on my laptop and it crawls now. I mean it's ok, but bootup is slow.

So I guess I should stop using this because all I use it for is AV. Symantec Corporate uses a lot less resources right?

And so many ppl say switch, but 2006 has Ghost. While Norton sucks for AV, is Ghost still good?

I would rather use no AV than have Norton/Symantec on my computer.

Ghost is a great tool, although I favor True Image 😛

So Ghost is fine, but not NAV or Symantec Corp 10 AV..?

im looking for somethign to replace my Systemworks 2005.

Friends dont let friends use Symantec products. Get Kaspersky Antivirus and Acronis True Image and be done with Symantec for good.

Norton Ghost is a decet program, which surprises me considering where it's comming from. Kaspersky AV and AVG are good anti virus programs, aswell as NOD32.

A little bar should come up at the top allowing you to put it on the safelist, it's pretty quick. Else...you could type the tags yourself. 😉 [Q.][/Q.]

Avir is another great anti-virus, and it's free to boot!

symantec antivirus is great. no bloat or crap included, just virus protection and a nice streamlined interface. now it also looks for spyware too!

Symantec is a shark. Norton Utilities was a great program - then it got acquired by Symantec. PC Tools was an even better DOS utility - then Symantec acquired it and threw the carcass on the scrapheap. Then it acquired CleanSweep and added it to PC Tools. In the meantime, NAV became the Frankenstein of the AV world. It takes over your system and is a bitch to get rid of. Then Symantec acquired PartitionMagic, etc. It still survives as a great program because Symantec simply rebadged it - but, DriveImage vanished. I do not choose to patronize sharks, especially those with a 20 year history of eating competitors and not improving their own product to the level of the competition.

And I am serious on agreeing on the no av if its just norton.

Ghost is good cause it's now basically partition magic with a ghost look and feel. I think Symantec is fine it's all taster's choice imo. I bet most of the people on ATNT use it, why? Because it's good enough for them not to switch. Everyone crys about Symantec buying the competition but they still use Windows and they probably only invest at large firms and put money away at large banks. Ever shop at Walmart or eat as McDonalds? They buy out the competition and instead of assimilate to try and improve they just shut them down and lose the money.

That said I use symantec cause it's NOT freeware. If something happens to my critical data and symantec fails I have someone to sue. Freeware/Linux is great as long as you don't mind basically being on your own. If freeware virus scans wind up accidentally deleting your financial files cause it thought it was a virus you're SOL cause the software was free, Symantec may not pay but at least I have a chance.

How do you like all of those annoying authorization popups? Zone Alarm FTL. :brokenheart:

Right now I have Symantec corporate.

I got it free when I was in the Navy. They wanted everybody to have it on their home systems.

Works just fine, no hogging, and it catches stuff in real time that all of the other freebee and most of the other retail programs cant get on a system scan.
The firewall is OK and again, not a hog.

If I had to pay a hundred bucks per year I wouldnt bother, but for free its DARN good.

EDIT:
Oh, and the regular Norton Programs are a pain. I've had all the suites and System Works since 2000. They get worse each year. More resource hogging, less intuitive (for a power user anyway) and they seem to take more control away and give less control in each new version. Gave up after 2004. Now I keep it simple.

Norton Ghost is a decet program, which surprises me considering where it's comming from.

That's because Ghost was another acquired product, although it's not even the same software it was when they originally bought it. It was originally released by Binary Research, then Symantec bought it and put their name on it. Lastly Symantec bought PowerQuest Drive Image and renamed it to Ghost.

If something happens to my critical data and symantec fails I have someone to sue.

Yea, good luck with that. Have you ever actually read the license you agreed to when you installed it?

Can you even name one instance where someone successfully sued a software company for loss of data?

Maybe Symantec will take notice and get with it. If not, by all indications, they might fall by the wayside. It happens to many companies who don't heed the consumers concerns.
Well, we shall see. I still use Ghost.
