So many DVD RW posts... DISCUSS DVD-R's HERE!

Let's make this THE thread to discuss DVD burners! 😀

I started by asking what was the one definitive drive to get.... and there's no definate answer.

Though there are some great drives out there.... weigh your pluses and minuses carefully! 😉

I'd say the NEC 2510A is the best all around cheap DVD burner, it just sucks as a reader from what I've heard so you may what to get a decitated DVD rom drive, also you can copy stuff on the fly if you do this. Hope this helps... 🙂

Thought about the DVR-108 it's the most cutting edge drive out right now I believe and fits your sub $100 by a couple bucks. I actually just got this drive but really cant say much for tests because I'm having a hard time finding media that can keep up with it. 16x DVD+R and 4xDVD DL for $25 more might be a good deal.

People recommend the 2510A because it's a cheap dual-layer burner, cheaper than Pioneer/Plextor drives, and it actually gets higher quality burns.

I would say, though, that at this point the Pioneer 108 might be the drive to get. $25 more and twice as fast. Well, not really twice as fast, but the real issue is that it's 16X DVD-R/+R, and that's the max speed you'll ever get, since you can't spin the media faster than about 10,000 RPM safely (actually, that puts the max DVD speed at 18X MAX, but nobody even made DVD-ROM's that fast).

It's still only 4X dual-layer, though, and that still means 30min to burn a disc, which is better than 50min for a 2.4X drive. By the time dual-layer media gets cheap enough to use, though, they'll probably have 16X DL drives, but you never know, because 16X DVD-ROM's still don't read dual-layer discs faster than about 6X. I've never seen a drive that can even read a pressed dual-layer disc at 16X, so they might never actually get 16X dual-layer.

Of course there's the NEC 3500A which is only like 17 bucks more and similar speed to the pioneer..

Not to threadjack but regarding what arcanedeath said, what's a good DVD-ROM drive? Only requirement is that its fast (16x) and has a black bezel

I would say this is probably worth it over the cheaper NEC's.

I'm reading what seems like a lot of reports on NEC not reading discs well.

For a one-drive-that-does-it-all solution, that ain't good.

I've read posts like that regarding the 2500A, but that's certainly not my experience with several 2510A's (and I thought they were supposed to be the same drive except the firmware).

I've used Lite-on drives exclusively for the past few years (16x DVD-ROM, 52x CD-RW, 8x DVD burner) and I highly recommend them for reliability and rippping speed. 😀 Everyone of my Lite-on drives have played everything I've thrown at it.

Even though DL media is still a little on the high side, I probably go ahead and get a DL burner. I'm not sure about what DL drives are offered by Lite-on, but the ones mentioned by NEC and Pioneer are good drives.

Another vote for the NEC 2510A - no coasters yet (*knock on wood*) and I haven't had a single problem reading any DVDs.

Chum
