Most likely the M44 with the bayonet removed and there are all kinds of accessories available for it. Personally, I would pick options that let me return the rifle to military config (no drill/tap scope mounts).

The M91/30 is a tad long to be lugging around for deer IMO.

I agree, go for M44. You can buy conversion kits that let you attach the scope without drilling. You should also buy bolt handle coversion kit which converts it from straight to curved downwards so it won't interfere with the scope. Both can be had in $30.00 range. Also, there are polymer drop-in style stocks that will make your rifle lighter.

Wow, amazing, no wonder everyone gets their daily knowledge from AT.

I'll pencil in M44 in my short list. How easy is it to attach a scope to this?

And I don't want to sound stupid, but what is the worse thing that can happen when you have a misfire with this rifle due to antique ammo?

I think I would go for a scout mount like this.

The MN rifles are VERY robust and sturdy so the chances of it blowing up are remote in the extreme. As far as ammo goes there is lots of new production stuff out there from Wolf and several US companies. You can find good surplus ammo but you really have to know what to look for (or avoid in the case of corrosive ammo).

Remember to always wear shooting glasses just in case. A case seperation (extremely rare with good ammo, more common with dodgy surplus) could cause gas to spray back out of the action.

Scope mount - you should be able to find a copy of Gun News magazine at most any news store or maybe even online (I'm at work and can't do it) which will give you an idea of what it looks like, basically it screws on to the left side of your receiver where it meets the stock. Kind of hard to describe, but a good picture should explain it. Ammo - as I mentioned, the ammo is still in active service today, you should have no problems finding recently manufacured ammo. Even with older surplus rounds you should be fine, so long as they do not have corrosive Berdan primers (which most of WWII era surpus did). You should be more concerend with the condition of the receiver, how worn is it ,and will be be able to withstand the shot. If you are buying a used rifle (any used gun for that matter) have it inspected by an experienced gunsmith. If you buy M44 it will most likely be brand new, or arsenal refinished to new condition.

I purchased a new SKS for $140, the best deal I think after walking all over the place. the packing grease was already removed, it does have the folding blade bayonet, and the granade launcher muzzle.

I also wanted to get a Mosin, but maybe next week at the Richmond show, because one of the vendor "Dark Sun" will be there and they have the best price. Brand new M91/30 for $80, and M44 for $70 (how do you attach a scope to it? I was looking at the rifle and it seems impossible).

The weapon itself looks amazing. A bit heavy, (I heard it is about 2 lbs heavier than M-16). I want to buy a scope for it, is there a good SFW sites you guys used? Also, the magazine is attached to the rifle and you have to load the cart from the top like a M1 Garand, is there a way to modify it easily?

Right now, it is going to be a conversation piece hanging in the living room until I find time to cleaning it and go shoot for the first time.

If anyone was there, I was there with a friend and her little girl. I was wearing a short denim skirt with boots and had my long hair down.

Pics? when I get around to it. :p

Congrats on your new Yugo ;) That would be my choice too, after Russian-built rifle, of course. Scope - you can buy a replacement receiver cover for SKS with scope mount already attached, a breeze to install. As for the magazine, I remember seeing speed loaders in Shotgun News. You can also purchase extended magazines, up to 30 rounds capacity. Loading it with stripper clips is easy IMO, and they are cheap at about $5.00 a dozen.

What kind of ammo did you pick up for it?

I did not buy any ammos yet, need to learn the rifle inside out first. Which means I need to find a manual of some sort first.

Oh yeah, I was suprised by all the older rifles on display there. There were more rifles and "antiques" and not a lot of modern pistols according to my friend. Suits me just fine, but she was dismayed as she was looking for a specific pistol made by para... somebody. Some guy was showing off his collections of lugers with different stamps and years.

I'm gonna be getting a SKS soon...they are cheap and fun to shoot.

A couple weeks ago, I picked myself up a new Glock 19 and a Mossberg 12 gauge pump shotgun...I'll take some pics later. :)

For SKS accessories, check out Cheaper than Dirt

They have a nice collection of stuff.

I live close to them & bought an SKS from them for ~$100 after taxes, ended up selling it to a friend, I think my next project will be a MN M44 & set it up as a deer rifle.

If you need a manual for your SKS, check out your local military surplus stores. I found a U.S. Army manual that detailed all of the various SKS models that were available at the time the manual was written. It had instructions for field stripping, cleaning, etc. I guess they figured if any of our boys ever ran out of ammunition and had to use guns in the local flavor, it would be helpful if they knew how to use them.

I would be willing to bet that there is a manual online somewhere, too.

:) Thanks. I like fine optics myself as well (not to mention it matches nicely with the wilson ss barrel) :) This is the one I picked up this Saturday at a local gun show for FAR less than factory direct, which is $1000 on the nose. I got it for $729 so I couldn't say no. :D I almost took another one he had, an Armalite (eagle arms) M4, "NO BAN" with ALL of the evil black rifle features. $999.95 was a bit much after taking the RR home with me :) The scope is temporary to break in the barrel (firelapping). I think an EOTech is in order afterwards.
