So lost, Upgrading CPU/MB/Memory and am out of the loop.

So I have a good video card, PSU, case, HD etc... I am trying to find a reasonable priced MB/CPU /w memory. Here is my idea so far:

CPU - i7 930
MB - ??
Memory - ??

I am likely not going to OC, I need nothing fancy when it comes to the MB etc.. just stable. I was thinking I could cut back slightly on the CPU, but I am really not sure I want to. I want this to last me 3-4 years. Most of what I do is play WoW and the rest is working with excel and other office apps which don't need much CPU power. However, I am building 2 of these and my wife does 3d rendering so CPU is important to her. We usually have the same machines so I'm just going to match them hehehe.

I have been out of the loop for a long time and am a little lost with the newer stuff out. I am somewhat hoping that I can keep all 3 in the $550 range including the CPU. I don't see any reason to go and pop $300 on a motherboard.... seems insane to me.

Honestly a P55 or AM3 platform makes more sense. X58 only really matters for multi-GPU solutions or for databases.

I agree with Sp12. With your budget, there is no way that you're going to get any kind of reasonable X58 setup. (Not that that is a bad thing.)

Here's my go-to recommendation of the day:
Phenom II x6 1055T $200 - for the rendering
GA-870A-UD3 $107 - up-to-date chipset
G.Skill DDR3 1600 4GB $99 - $89 until Wednesday
Total: $406

You can get 2 of those G.Skill kits (for a total of 8GB) if you want to be right at $550. It might be useful for your wife's, but I doubt it would be useful for you.

I appreciate the assistance. The wife kind of has her heart set on the i7 930. I may change mine up a bit, but she does so much 3d rendering in 3ds max, autocad and photoshop... that it does make sense for her. The Intel's (even the i5's) seem to beat the Phenom's when it comes to 3d rendering applications. Even with the 2 extra cores the i7 seems to beat out the Phenom by a decent margin in 3ds max.... from the little bit I can find. Unless someone knows of other reviews I just can't seem to find? Without OCing and comparing to the older 920.....

So I may end up with one of your recomendations for my own personal setup, however, I had looked into it a bit more on the i7 930 for her's. Would this work well for the i7 930 for hers?

GeIL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333

and

MSI X58M LGA 1366 Intel X58

I would not recommend the GeIL RAM because it is 1.65V. You would want 1.5V or less for Nehalem. Something like this G.Skill would be better (and cheaper!). Honestly though, you're looking 50% more money for only ~16.8% more performance (on average taken by summing the times, also assuming that the 930 scales perfectly). It just seems like a terrible deal to me.

As for yourself, I would recommend going for the combo that booboo posted.
