So, looks like the ps3 is completely hacked.

Yeah, it's a stupid rumor. Not going to happen. Especially not with activation online...that would shut too many people out. Not only will it not happen, Sony probably outright forbid licensees to do so.

CD keys for console games was already happening independently of the PlayStation 3 being fully cracked. EA has been using them with their games if you want to play online. Buy a used copy of Madden without the key you need to play EA $10 if you want to play it online.

Now that Playstation 3 has been fully cracked, PC-style copy protection schemes are the only means Sony and game publishers have to try to protect their games. CD keys for online play is about the only scheme that works, so I won't be surprised at all if game publishers choose to go this route. Publishers won't give Sony the option to forbid it.

Ideally they should only require it for online play as anything else will be pointless as far as piracy is concerned, but somehow I doubt that's what Sony or the other publishers will do. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they used the threat of "OMG Pirates!" as a cover to use the keys on everything and put a dent in the used market for all games. Then everyone will blame the hackers while the truth is they just used them as a convenient excuse to do what they've wanted to do for a long time. The pirates will still pirate and everyone else gets the screw job.

I don't think I'm 100% opposed to paying a fee for online access with used games, as essentially you are paying for a service. The very valid argument comes into play if that game advertises online functionality on the box - then you get into shady areas. No doubt this is seen as a way to get money from secondary sales.

At least the 360 charges this fee up front, and it's an easy yes/no question if you want to pay for the service. For me, it's not worth $30+/yr, but I also don't play games online.

I have to tip my hat to geohotz for what he did but at the same time he really screwed alot of us legit players over. I was not expecting the Ps3 to get fully hacked like it did. I sold my 360 and bought a PS3 mainly because I cant afford both systems and my daughter wanted little big planet and I did also.

Now out of every 10 games in MW2 I get into a hacked server and it is bullshit. I got demoted back to lvl 1 in MW2 because I got put into a hacked server and the dude was a douchebag. I couldn't leave soon enough and the damage was done.

If sony goes to Cd keys I will be very happy about it, if not then I will have to eat ramen noodles for quite a while and buy an new 360 LOL

It sounds like the PC version and PS3 version of MW2's online have reached parity. 🙁

if MS can ban a specific 360 from getting on XBL then sony should be able to ban specific PS3s

Microsoft can ban specific Xbox 360s from Xbox Live because they can still trust the 360 hardware to indentify itself uniquely. The PlayStation 3 however has been completely compromised. Sony can't trust PS3 hardware anymore that they can trust a PC to uniquely identify itself.

In fact it's now theoretically possible for a PC to connect to the PlayStation Network as if it were it really a PS3. There's no way Sony could tell the difference.

How do PS3 servers work? Is it possible to create some kind of VPN software, emulate a LAN, and play other people who are running custom firmware?

Wow, interesting stuff going on here for people interested in the gaming industry. Could be that the hackers have crossed a PR line and may end up falling out of favor with the general population.

If I dropped $300 on a console only to see it go the way of the Dreamcast in less than a year, I'd certainly be pissed. Just gonna be a matter of whether Sony can save the PS3 and which side wins the PR war.

Sony winning a PR war won't unhack the ps3. People aren't going to put up with cheaters on PSN in order to make a moral stand in solidarity with Sony. They'll just not buy Sony products anymore if they believe they're easily hacked. The hackers have no profit motive, not do they need the publics favor or approval to exist. They literally can't lose, and Sony literally can't win.

You might be pissed, but what are you or anyone else going to do about it?

I'm talking about the bigger picture. The public at large has been largely resistant to any attempts to criminalize the conduct of hackers or enforce existing laws against hackers. Largely because hacking has formerly been perceived as an activity that benefits the public at large and only harms big corporations.

If Sony effectively leverages this situation against hackers, they might get enough public support to pass legislation that makes certain hacking-related activities illegal and enforces stricter penalties and enforcement of existing law against hackers. Not saying it will happen or that it's even probable, but there has got to be at least a few PR folks at Sony who are licking their chops right now, and clearly InfinityWard has fired a few salvos at the hackers already.

Ultimately, I'm just saying that it's interesting that hacking has been, until know, perceived with Robin Hood-esque approval from everybody who doesn't work or profit directly from the gaming industry. Same thing with the music, movie, and entertainment industry at large. But now at least a few people have felt like they've been screwed over by the PS3 hack because it ruined their enjoyment of certain games.

Remains to be seen whether these people will blame Sony or the hackers or both.

Even if legal threats became more of a reality, the only end result would probably be that hackers would protect their identities better. maybe a few young lives would be ruined, but it wouldn't solve the core problem. People don't like child molesters either, but they're not going away anytime soon. It's practically a law of nature at this point that if something is hackable, someone will try to do it. It's a wonder they kept it secure this long. The only thing they can do is actually protect their system properly in the first place.

as long as there is code, there will be hackers. easy as that. stricter penalties and new legislature is not going to make the hackers go away.

So what are some of the things that can even be done with this jailbreak? Other than getting Linix and pirating games?

People have brought up cheating in games. What else is possible? Has anything been made and tested yet, or is it all speculation of what will happen?

Hopefully XBMC will be ported to the PS3. I just got the new Apple TV and put XBMC on it, it's awesome. So much better than the standard interface for streaming video on either the Xbox 360 or the PS3.

Also, emulators for older consoles, possibly the PS2 and certainly anything earlier is possible.

Those are the two things that interest me most. Linux and pirating, not so much. Sorry for the people who play online games on the PS3, but for me this is great since my PS3 will be useful for something more than just a Blu-ray player now.

mkv support would be great, and I guess I just don't know enough about XBMC, but I'll look into it.

Sadly, I don't play many games at all on my PS3, maybe a game or 2 a year and blu ray player with some pictures/video streaming from my computer.

Where am i able to learn more about this? I don't want to hack, i just want to try and jailbreak the ps3 for some homebrew downloads... also for future XBMC port

looks like there isn't much there yet. From what I can tell, it is not 100% open due to the hacker not releasing how to sign programs yet.

Also I read about XBMC and their team has stated they will NOT be working to bring it to the ps3 with this new hole. They are fine with anyone else working on it, but they have choosen not to port it.
