The wife wants a Wii for Christmas, and with the WalMart deal starting this weekend, it looks like I cannot refuse. Thus, as I am resigned to the fact that I will inevitably own a Wii, what are some good games for a "core" (lol) gamer? I know the new Super Mario Bros, and Metroid Prime trilogy, and I already own Zelda for the GameCube, but what else is out there for someone who wants to do more than waggle all day?

Boom Blox. I don't care if you're a core gamer or have never played before, the game is a blast.

Super Mario Galaxy is good, I've heard the new Super Mario Bro's remake is great (not played it though). Other games you might look at are No More Heroes, World of Goo, and whatever that mercenary chainsaw game is (I can't remember, never played it but I hear it was decent).

I will voice a minority opinion that Boom Blox isn't that great of a game. It seems to receive universal praise from "core gamers" so I picked it up for the girlfriend and we had some fun but it's still kind of a gimmicky party game.

Plus, I think one major flaw is that we had to cheat to even have fun, because you have to unlock levels. So unless you use a cheat to unlock all of the stages, you have to do five levels of the shooting gallery, then five levels of another game type, etc., etc. This is not what we signed up for, we just wanted to smash some blocks.

Some other games to consider:

Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Zack & Wiki (can be frustrating)
LostWinds (WiiWare)
Okami (if you've never played it, although supposedly the PS2 version plays better)
Mario Kart Wii
Super Paper Mario

I have no interest in Boom Blox.

All of the Mario games, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Smash Bros and Punch Out are all on my list. Muramasa and the RE shooter games are maybes. I already own Twilight Princess for the GameCube.

Can you use the GameCube component cables with the Wii?

What kind of batteries do the Wii-motes use?

There's not much but yeah Muramasa is cool if you like those types of games

2 AA for batteries for each remote.

I don't know if gamecube component cables work. I bought a 3rd party cable.

My Wii collects dust :)

I know my GF loves Animal Crossing on the Wii. It's a great game assuming you haven't played the previous iterations that were essentially the same. Mario Kart is always good, but really good games are pretty few and far between on the Wii.

I don't have a Wii, and all the games I know I would buy if I had one have already been mentioned. That being said, you could check out the top-rated games at the following two links:

http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html?site=wii&cat=0&year=0&numrev=0&sort=0&letter=&search=

http://www.metacritic.com/games/wii/scores/

Oh, and I bought Super Paper Mario for my nephew. I read some reviews on it, and it looks really good, so I'll second the recommendation for that.

If the GC component cables don't work, then buy this: http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10830&cs_id=1083007&p_id=5689&seq=1&format=2

I can't read any of the review sites right now. :(

And thanks for the Monoprice link! I was just going to ask if they have a cheap Wii component cable from Monoprice. Wow, $4 + shipping versus $30 for the "official" ones.

Super Mario Galaxy - The best game on the Wii by far
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Don't get it for single player, multiplayer is addictive if you get a couple people to play
Metroid Prime Trilogy
World of Goo (Wiiware)
Super Paper Mario
Mario Kart Wii
New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The following games come on multiple platforms but if you have not played them before, absolutely pick them up for the Wii, the Wii versions are the best of these. Each of these can be had brand new for $20 or less.

Resident Evil 4
Okami - I like this better than any Zelda game. I'd consider it the most unknown about good game on the Wii and within the top 3 best Wii games.
New Play Control Pikmin

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

I already said in the OP that I have Twilight Princess for the GameCube...

So, the consensus seems to be pretty much all of the Nintendo regulars (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc.) with maybe a few decent third-party games sprinkled in.

FYI, there is 20% bing cashback through walmart.com currently. Not sure if you can get the wii deal through the website, though.

Mario Kart Wii

I have been a Mario Kart fan for a long time and this one is horrible. The controls are utter crap for turning compared to the Mario Karts in the past. Mario Kart for the GC blows this away. If you have GC controllers I would suggest you get that one as it will play on the Wii.

Mario Party 8 is fun for a family
Super Smash Brothers Brawl

"Core gamer"

The most retarded term to come out in the past few years. Core meaning what?

Get Mario Galaxy

Core Gamer generally means someone who plays the "real" or "hardcore" games. Casual Gamer = stuff like Nintendogs and Wii Fit, Core Gamer = stuff like Halo, Mario, Call of Duty

Oh, i know where the term came from, that's what makes it stupid. To suggest that anyone who enjoys playing COD, Halo, Battlefield, or whatever else is a hardcore gamer is just retarded. That term always meant, to me, someone who took gaming a little too seriously, played games a lot, and was very good at them. Casual Gamers were always the opposite ends of the spectrum: people who enjoyed games, but had a life and never really spent too much on a game.

Most wii games would fall under what I'd call family games, not casual games. Differences in definition, I suppose.

But whatever, I'm going offtopic, sorry bout that.

What are you looking for? Grown up games, or introductions, or family games. The wii sports packages and sports games are really quite good. You can go Dead Space or the RE's. Or a friend of mine was on the team that just released World of Zoo. Good for kids or "easing" into some of those console sims.....I'll give it a free plug for him: http://www.gamespot.com/wii/sim/worldofzoo/index.html
