I listed some stereo equipment on craigslist a few days ago and yesterday got an email about it asking whats the lowest price I would take. So I replied with my price then today he replied with

Good , the only problem is that the Boy am willing to buy this item
for ain't here with me in the state, and am willing to make this as a
Gift for him, So i will ask you if you can help me get this this item
shipped out to him through the united state postal service express
mail international ems 8 days delivery, i will offer you $970 for the
item including the shipping fees down to him cause have look into the
shipping fees my self down to my Boy, and i will prefer to pay you by
pay pal cause i wont be able to pick the item up, All you need to do
for me now is to get back to me with your pay pal account e mail
address so that i can pay you off on time and if you don't seems to
have an account i will advise you to sign up for a pay pal account its
very use full...........
Thank you for your time......

To me it sounds like a scam, but he is offering to pay through paypal so I wasn't sure. I am assuming it is, but how could he not pay me if he pays me through paypal and then I ship?

Ah ok I looked up the chargeback. But what if as soon as I get the money in my paypal account if I buy something online worth close to the same amount. Would I get the item and the scammer would be s.o.l. or would my item not get shipped?

uh then your bank account goes into the negatives and you're still fucked

Well my paypal account is not associated with any bank accounts or anything. I used a visa gift card to get my account verified and I just use money that I receive from sales to spend.

They'll send you a bogus email that looks like it's from paypal saying that funds have been deposited in your name, but in order for them to release it, they'll need confirmation that you've send the item out.

You then forward the url of that website and the offending email to spoof@paypal.com

From the craigslist website.

* DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.
* NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
* FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
* CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
* NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
* AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

It's not new. I've gotten the same reply several times trying to sell PS2, old stereo, etc on Craigslist.

I once replied with: "Fuck off and die."
I then got this response: "OK."

Don't touch the scam. Craigslist should be cash or nothing.

This, ALWAYS.

rules of CL:

1. Cash ONLY
2. Local ONLY
3. Pick-up (deliver if you're nice)

Never deviate from these rules. Applies to personals as well 😉

Tell your buyer to meet in person and pay CASH and you will give him/her additional $50 or $100 (or even $900 discount 😉) and watch him/her making more excuses on how they cant meet etc. etc.

as mentioned...first rule of CL = LOCAL & CASH only (meeting at a public place is always desirable).

Haha yep I got an email from paypal today saying they have received a payment that I will receive once I confirm that I have shipped the product. So I sent the scammer an email today telling him that I went up to see how much it would be to ship everything and it came out to a lot more than I expected so I am going to need some cash in my paypal account before I can send it. I wonder what type of excuse he makes up.
