my self I will say NO untill all of the cards on are on the table and BOTH the 420 and 6800 are out in full numbers with mature drivers.
Right now yes the 420 is a very nice card....but personally Im waiting for EVERYTHING to be out

which x800?

and an x800 is currently "top of the line", but that will more than likely change when the next card is released within the next few weeks.

I will consider any of the current new offering from either ati or nvidia top of the line. both are darn fast.

the Nvidia 6800 ultra needs 2 power connecters and of course takes up 2 slots again. They also need at least a 400 watt power supply.

all the 6800s will run at stock speeds on one molex connector.

the 6800u requires a 350w ps, the gt and plain vanilla need 300w.

The fastest card you can buy right now is the X800 Pro. That will change in a week or two, when both the 6800 Ultra and X800 XT become available. Both are faster than the X800 Pro, but cost $100 more. The X800 XT is currently faster on newer games, but newer drivers may change the standings. Either card should be a good choice as a top-of-the-line purchase when they're available.

The Radeon X800 XT is currently the fastest overall GPU on the planet. If you play more OpenGL games then the GeForce 6800 GT/Ultra should be your choice and if you play mostly DirectX 8/9 games than the Radeon X800 Pro/XT should be your choice.:)

430 on paper, but I've heard of people getting by with 350's.

What I don't understand is this, what exactly ARE you people using up all those PCI slots for anyway? who in their right mind puts a PCI card right next to their ultra high end video card? I have 5 PCI slots, I'm using one of them... And besides, anybody ever heard of Arctic Cooling? Seems like a lot of ATI owners put that on their cards, wait, isn't that a 2 slot solution also? And in response to the PSU, nVidia says a 350 watt PSU is enough now, the extra molex is for overclockers.

"Seems like a lot of ATi owners put that on their cards"
Exactly, idiot.
THEY put it on, as a CHOICE, it's not what comes with the damned product.

If people want the choice, then ATi gives them that choice (1 or 2 slots), nVidia requires 2 slots.

And not everyone has more than 1 PCI slot anyway (SFF PC's)
Or they might have sound card, IDE/SCSI add-in card, USB card for more USB ports, TV card, that's four gone.
Second graphics card for multi-monitor. Wireless network card, modem or some kind.

Just because you don't use many PCI slots doesn't cover the whole PC user populace. Neither does the number of people putting Arctic coolers on their graphics cards, or the people with micro/pico/SFF PC's.

And yes, the X800Pro is top or the range since it's the only one of the new cards which can be purchesed sometimes (unless places have sold out).
Other cards should be out soon.

Alright there lonyo, take it easy, have fun putting pci cards next to your video card  not trying to change your mind, stating a fact

EDIT: And small pcs like the shuttle are great and all, but look at the new ones by antec, you CAN fit a 2 slot card into them. Shuttle isnt the only sff producer you know.

He's just asking if it is a top of the line card, that's like asking if a Lamborghini a top of the line car. It would be different if he was asking which is the fastest, of which a Lamborghini isn't...but is still pretty damn fast...

and i'm not saying it isnt. The x800 series is top of the line until nVidia comes out, then the fight begins.
