I've heard so many mixed comments, some praising SP2, others slagging it off. As a result i'm a little hesitant to update my system to SP2.

So please Answer this Poll and any comments below would be appreciated :)

your probably going to update to sp2 some day, but I would just wait like me for a month for microsoft to probably fix it bugs. Most of the people that are posting up help topics for sp2 are a small majority of those who installed sp2. I know an IT and who owns his own computer repair store, install sp2 on all 12 of his comps and no problems at all.

If you live near a comp usa, they are offering a free upgrade to sp2 and they do it in store.

Another sp2 thread? Oi.

Anyhow, yes it's worth it. Extra security is almost always worth it. Although, in this case it isn't really extra. It's the basic security other systems have had for a while.

Nice, alsa, i'm from UK, we done get anything for free :( Even if the update is free, you'd get charged for the "labour" to install it.

But thx for the input anyways, might wait a little longer.........

Hmm, fair enough, but are these security measures really needed ? I mean, i have a firewall and am careful about what i click, download and places i visit when browsing the web. Are these security updates that SP 2 provides really needed for a system with up to date SP1 installation and a decent firewall?

Have it on two computers.

If there are problems I haven't discovered them yet.

Windows finally gets per page execution permissions, which are really nice. By finally, I mean Windows finally runs on a processor that supports them. :p

IE is cheesey. sp2 plugs a bunch of holes.

XP's pre-sp2 firewall is just junk. sp2 improves it.

Yes, these kinds of things *are* needed. Not everyone is as careful as you say you are. Not everyone has a firewall, and can configure it properly. Not everyone has up to date anti-virus software autochecking everything.

If you'd rather volunteer your time teaching everyone these things and stopping all of the system exploiters out there, I don't think Microsoft would mind. Fix those two social issues (ignorance and eliteness), and we no longer need security. Fail, and we need to find new ways to make these problems a bit less important.

Well its a free upgrade, so I would recommend a sp2 upgrade

In my opinion, if your computer has up to date virus protectors and spyware, a computer running without a sp2 upgrade shouldnt be too vulnerable. Still its best to have it, but im just going to wait a couple of weeks since I only have one computer and I dont want to risk it....just yet

I'm sure there are people out there that aren't as careful as myself with their system security, but i'm trying to get some idea for myself, and hopefully these comments here and the poll will help others to make up their minds too.

The only way to really know is to install it and find out. ;)

not to be off topic

hell...I only use microsoft built in firewall.....no viruses at all....

I dont use firewalls like norton personal firewall, or physical firewall.....

You could argue all you want about how the others are better and your right. But I dont want to hear about it.

microsoft built in firewall is good enough for me & (my network environment)

Use common sense when you go online and for pc maintence, what to click to download..etc etc

Its just like a car, I dont need a to drive a bullet proof hummer. Old fasioned door locks are good enough.

Like I realllllllllllllllllllllllly have such top secret documents on my computer.

Before you guys start to pounce on me, I do understand the need for security.

Microsoft's sp2 firewall is supposed to be decent (I haven't used it, that's why I use the phrase "supposed to be"), so that's not an issue.

Antivirus is important. There are a couple of free solutions out there if you're interested.

And it isn't what you have on your computer that people are interested (I'm assuming you're as boring as most of us ;)), it's the resources your computer can provide that make it an interesting target.

Anyways, thx for your.....erm......non-productive and unhelpful comments.

Sorry you took it that way, but there are a dozen threads with hundreds of posts about this now just in OS. I'm just not sure what another thread accomplishes.

That said, regarding your:

I'd say yes. Most people have commented on the visual changes (security center, new firewall), but there are many many internal changes designed to reduce the attack surface that (as this gets widely adopted) will help reduce the impact of the next attacks.

I think bsobel was having a bad day when he replied,he`s normally polite and productive ;).

SP2 wise,I `ve had no real problems, however I do know a few people that have had some serious issues, one had to role back to SP1 so he could connect to the net (computer network engineer btw)and another couldn`t even boot her Athlon 64 rig,she had to do a slipstream XP+SP2 fresh OS install.

I would still recommend installing SP2,since in general most users are having positive results then bad.
