So...is nVidia planning to release anything in the $180s price range?

Also the 470 has been showing up on sale lately for $200 and it crushes both the 6870 & 6850.

So again the 6870/6850 need to drop in price. A lot. 6850 should be around $100 or less. 6870 maybe $140 or less.

No, no no. You're doing it all wrong.

You have to look at it realistically. AMD (and Nvidia) will sell their products for what the market will bear. I don't know anything about AMD sales but if their videocards are selling according to projections, they should stick to their plan which I doubt is dropping the price to $100 and $140

GTX 460/560 = 331/367mm^2
HD 6850/70 = 255mm^2

Nvidia doesn't want a price war in that range. AMD can sell 6850s at $100 if they have to (same die size as 4850 and they did there) and there's no way Nvidia can make money if they introduce a GTS 550 then drop it down to that level.

Both companies are probably happy with the status quo margins wise, AMD more so obviously.

Oh no not this again....

The giant hole in your theory is that AMD is not making any profit.

Logically, one would assume this but since the R & D of GeForce AND their HPC cards is together their higher margins of profit from HPC sales offsets any advantage AMD has in the mainstream market.
GTX460 1GB< 6850 Unless the GTX 460 is OC'd.
GTX 470~ 6870
GTX570 ~ 6970
GTX580 ~ 5970

NVIDIA pretty much has it covered.
Fixed for you.
