so is it fried?

i thought my 9700 pro was artifacting and overheating when i first got my new motherboard and cpu... well i used my gf2 till i recently got a new nice HSF for it. Well its running nice and cool, and runs fine in safe mode.. and when its not using drivers. The bios screen and the loading windows screen has artifacts all over it but when it gets to windows all seems to be fine (that is if the drivers are not installed). I've tried fast write, lower and increasing voltages.. lower my overclock etc etc etc. Do you think its fried somehow? any ideas? ANYTHING would be appreciated. Thanks

i had a similar problem happen to me once. To solve it, I just popped off the hsf, cleaned the core and hsf with some rubbing alch., and applied some artic silver. Never had an artifact issue again.


Also, if it's built by ati, you should be able to rma pretty easily. My friend's 9700 pro died a couple months ago, so he rma'd it. There was only a 2 week turn-around, and ATI also sent him a 9800 pro instead of a 9700 pro to replace it.

should i RMA directly to ati? (i still have retail package and all the goodies)

and there's an after market hsf on it... so woudl they accept that? (my old one broke)

sounds to me like you should look into what problems you might have caused when you desided to use an aftermarket heatsink. i doubt ati will want to rma your card when it seems like an overheating problem and you have been screwing with the cooling.

It may not be a heat problem, check your voltages, especially your 3.3 rail.

You cant RMA it now,when you removed the stock heatsink you voided your warranty.

You should have RMA it when the stock fan broke but now it's too late.

yea i got a new hsf because the stock one broke... So because they cant make good HSF and i dont want to wait 2 weeks for a new fan, when the solution is right down the street for the same price (basically if u count shipping), theyre gonna tell me i voided warranty?

Well you did void the warranty, despite the fact that the stock HS is cheap. When it broke, you should have RMA'ed it then.

bastards... well i'll try to cry to ati like an idiot see if i can get anything out of them... this gf2 just isnt doing the job, even though i am suprised at how well it runs far cry (for how old it is at least)

I had a problem with artifacting once, it turned out after much troubleshooting it was simply a defective card

it was TNT2 Ultra from back in the day.

yea im afraid it is defective.. but this all started when i got my new motherboard. What kind of settings can i change around to try to fix this?

you can try upping your agp voltage to 1.6 or 1.7v.

i had a 9700pro with a better cooler on it, and it died so i put the stock one back on and RMAed it with no problem at all. the warrenty didn't say anything directly against useing better cooling on it, so didn't see any reason not to RMA it and apparently ati felt the same way as they sent me a new one.
