So is ATI going to go 3D or is it time to jump ship to NVIDIA?

disappoint

NVidia has their 3D vision thing with shutter glasses, is ATI going to step up to the plate and jump on the 3D bandwagon any time soon or am I going to have to jump ship and go back to NVidia to game in 3D?

the entire industry is moving in that direction. i wouldnt worry about it until games properly support it though on a larger scale. lot of games still have UI related issues with it, which makes them unplayable in 3D without modification of the UI

who cares?

Like you said, its a bandwagon. When there is 3D that looks great without any glasses, I'll consider it.

Have you actually seen / played a game using the nvidia 3d glasses and a 3d monitor? The local Fry's Electronics in my neighborhood has one on display and the only games which really seemed to benefit were the RTS's. The rest was just eye candy like 3d glass shards in NFS: Underground when you crashed.

Definitely not worth the $170 for the glasses and who knows how much for the special monitor.

It's been a fad for over 5 years. More of gimmick device until technology evolve.

I think that tech is evolving, with monitors and tv's coming out specifically for it.

I do not think it is a fad, but it'll take time to be in any relevant number of households.

There's quite a few 3d solutions available. Nvidia's is just one more that happens to be their own (though I'm pretty sure the glasses are just licensed Samsung glasses). But it's no different than using iZ3d or DDD Tridef driver along with whatever shutter glasses work (Samsung, E-dimensional, Bit Cauldron?). You can also go the polarized glasses route using iZ3d's 22" monitor.

What AMD added recently was driver hooks for quad buffering at 120hz so iZ3d and DDD's drivers could work at that high of refresh. Technically you can do 3d on a 60Hz monitor using those drivers and any shutter glasses you just get flickering which is what stymied the growth of 3d when 60Hz LCD's overtook CRT monitors.

I saw no benefit at all to 3d gaming...until I saw avatar in 3d. If games come out with that sort of 3d realism then I think it would be a huge step forward.

Honestly, the thought of gaming with 3D glasses on isn't appealing.

This, and what about those of us that wear glasses already? I think the whole 3d vision concept is a waste of time and money. Stick to the basics people

It’s still a bit gimmicky. ATI advised in the 5870 Eyefinity piece that it's moving towards a holo-deck like environment in about six years.

It didn't work fifty years ago. I don't it's going catch on now. I know there has been quantum leaps in tech since then but still....
Did anyone catch Samsungs warning that their new 3D tv's could possibly cause siezures or a stroke in some people. At my age, I'm not taking the chance. You kids go for it :) .

Lol, I'm pretty sure your TV has the exact same warning if you looked in the owners manual. Did you know I can turn the lights on and off really fast and give certain people seizures. You really shouldn't be scared by those warnings, they are there so people with photosensitive Epilepsy cannot sue because they decide to watch Pokemon.

I expect 3D for bluray will work ok on a radeon eventually, but if you want 3d gaming you've really got to go nvidia.

See this article on building a 3D display wall, but is basically an article on 3D gaming without using nvidia 3D vision:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/3d-polarized-projector,review-31849.html

From what I can tell even buying iZ3D and TriDef drivers and wasting a lot of time trying to get it to work game support was still pretty rubbish (most games didn't work well, and no DX10/11 support).

Nvidia are bigger, work more closely with the games makers, and also write the graphics card drivers so can tweak to make 3D work. Yet for all that even nvidia's support is patchy - trying to use someone like iZ3D is going to be a recipe for frustration most of the time.

Saw 3-d at PAX East. Looked like a gimmick to me. It really didn't add anything to my gameplay experience.

You have to use the beta driver for DX10/11 and shutter glasses instead of polarization.

We had capable CRT's. LCD's are just catching up.

I don't really care about 3D but the monitors for it are pretty nice at 120Hz. I picked one up a couple weeks ago and it looks a lot nicer than a 60Hz screen. I don't even use vsync anymore because I don't need it, I haven't seen the screen tear once since I got the monitor. I'd like to see 120Hz monitors pushed more so they could use it with better panels (right now they're all TN), but I expect them to stay a niche product because they are only advertised for their 3D capability (which is a gimmick imo).
