No, the tile guy isn't an idiot. He proceed exactly as he should have by asking his client what she wanted. That the client chose poorly isn't his problem.

He's an idiot for suggesting it. This is not what was envisioned nor was it what we agreed on when we contracted with the installer (this guy works for the company we choose to do the backsplash).

My wife is an idiot for going with his recommendation and apparently I am an idiot for going in to work instead of being there so I could micromanage the whole operation.

But I'm going to live with it. I'm not OCD enough that it will bother me THAT much and we have enough stuff on the counters it won't be that noticeable anyway. If it bothers me I'll color those little tiles in to match the travertine and it won't even be noticeable at all.

OK, I consulted with my wife. It's too busy. You should have went with plain tiles with symmetrical accent pieces.
There is also too much glass ware above the sink. She should put it away.
Nice cupboard, counter top, fridge and stove but this idea of having the microwave above the stove is a recipe for an accident.

So there you have it. Our completely unbiased opinion.

o_O What kind of accident? We've lived in this house for 15 years now and never had any issue with the placement of the microwave. My only complaint is that when we use the right rear burner on the stove the fan comes on automatically after a few minutes. We never use them both at the same time.

I like the crystal above the sink. When the afternoon sun comes in that garden window in the summer it sparkles off that crystal (it is Waterford).

lol @ the bob appetit plague

About the microwave, i think its just kind of weird that its set back behind the stove a bit so if you have to lean over burners to get to it. I'm not actually sure if that is normal, the microwave in my apt is above the stove but comes out flush with it.

Tiles look good... not worth redoing them

This is ATOT so roughly half are going to "die " if they have to live with anything asymmetrical and will obsess over distance from an edge as well. The rest think it's ludicrous to spend the money to redo it. There is no possible way to get the tile man to redo it without paying double. You and your wife are foolish for not deciding this ahead of time. Ever watch a show called "Dream House?" It's all about folks who spent obscene amounts of money because they couldn't plan more than 30 seconds into the future.
Personally, I think analogous colors in different materials is boring and trite no matter where you put the accent pieces.

First of all, only read the OP.

In order, these would be my choices:

1. No accents
2. Symmetrical
3. Assymetrical

I don't know if its just the colors of those accents or what, but I do not like them whatsoever. I guess I would prefer, for instance, a horizontal accent line rather than random (or organized) dots.

And no, you should not call the contractor and ask him to do something opposite of how your wife told him to do it. That is not going to be a successful conversation.

Good, if it's so simple why are you here asking opinions?

Blame it on your wife, get out your checkbook and pay the guy to redo the whole thing if you don't like it. Maybe next time you will put on your big boy pants, meet your contractor, and tell him exactly how you would like the work to be performed.

EDIT:
After looking at the pictures closer it's such a poor job of tile layout, on such a simple tract home "L" shaped kitchen, I would hope it's the guy's first job. If you paid more than $80 or $100 labor for that, you got thoroughly fucked.

You're kinda... I don't know how to say it - dumb.

Also, his kitchen looks fine. Actually, it's more than fine. Let's see your kitchen.

The warped shelf and wine glass rack in the window bother me more than the tile accents :D.

Also, that granite makes me nauseous. :colbert:

Hmm, that high-contrast granite is just too busy, and the tile backdrop doesn't complement it, IMO. The two should not be juxtaposed. Pick a solid color tile or go with glass or metal on the backdrop.

I for one would not be inclined to accent with black squares, but if I did, I'd use maybe 3x more than what you got; scattered symmetrically amongst solid-color tiles.

I wouldn't be satisfied either, but I wouldn't make the guy redo unless I was prepared to pay.

Shelf isn't warped. All that shit on it is kinda heavy so it bows a little under the weight. When I take it out it is straight.

What's wrong with the wine glasses? That is Waterford crystal BTW.

The only thing I hate about our kitchen is the bar stools... of course, my wife picked those out.

I have to be honest, at first I was like WTF!!! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

But we have stuff that that will sit on the counter and cover quite a bit of this up anyway so does it really matter?

Probably not.

When playing the whole DIY thingy I notice such stuff, heck it leaps out at me. After a little while I no longer notice. Maybe you won't either.
